Plenue 2 Mk II

Have a Plenue R and am thinking about getting either an R2 or a Plenue 2 mkii. Aside from the obvious (bluetooth on the R2 vs none), any thoughts on advantages/disadvantages? Can anyone confirm the boot-up (database update) time on the Plenue 2 mkii? On the R, the database update time is very quick (much faster than my D2) so the automatic database update every time you boot-up is a non-issue for the R, but concerned maybe it's longer on the Plenue 2 mkii as that may be an older and slower processor.

It depends. My P II mk2 has a 256 Gb sd card which has about 205 Gb music on it. Minimum boot time is about 15 seconds. From first appearance of the ‘Plenue’ logo to ‘Database Update’ is 9 seconds — that’s pretty constant. The additional 6 seconds (minimum) happens consistently if the card hasn’t changed since the previous reboot or update. I tried adding 5 tracks, and boot time went from 15 to 19 seconds. I guess that if I changed more then it would be longer still.

When I initiated a database update from the Settings UI the update consistently took 28 seconds or so. I guess that’s a ‘full re-index’ so it probably gives you a max boot time of 37 seconds, say when you put a different card in, which forces a full re-index on boot.

Boot time seems like a relatively minor factor to base a purchase decision on though. To me, the addition of Bluetooth, double the battery life, less competent DAC chip, and more power are more significant.

That said, I do find the Plenue D boot times annoying. I mostly leave it in sleep mode and plug it into a charger once a week or so. That way it’s always ready to go.

Personally I wonder if there’s a 4499-based Plenue coming.

Has anyone encountered the same problem with MK2? Turned on AI Volume and then when I played a particular song, the volume is the highest almost makes me deaf. However, no problem with other songs. What should I do?

@LCMusicLover Just got my mk2 and booted up.

When I connect it to my Mac I can browse the internal storage but I don't see my microsd...is there something (or some program) I need to do so I can manage files on the card when I connect this to my Mac?

Taking a look through settings and I have a few questions. Where is the option to turn on/off gapless? Or is it gapless by default? Lastly, you can only have that big number display for time elapsed rather than the actual minutes/seconds?

Edit: This thing sounds incredible. Also the jet effects are fun to toggle and get different feels. For fun, check out this little guy I found at my parents house a few weeks ago...

Cowon has well-structured official manual on their website that answers most questions. Hope this will help :relaxed:

It doesn’t tell me how to get rid of the big time elapsed number or explain why I can see internal storage but not microsd storage on my Mac. It seems that you can only see minutes/seconds elapsed while scrubbing. None of the skins have actual time, just those dumb big numbers that go over 60 seconds but don’t convert to minutes.

Okay, maybe it really doesn't.

As I remember, my Plenue 2 (and mk2 also) has gapless mode by default. Regarding elapsed time number, I see three possible options in main settings screen: Elapsed/Remaining/Elapsed+. You need the third one.
And I can't help with Mac connection, but on Windows it works great without any software quirks.

Waiting for mine to arrive. Got one from Amazon for a great price. Hopefully it can beat my mod zx507. The the 2.5 mmm balanced and will need to make an adapter this weekend. All of my headphones are reterminated by me with 4.4 mm balanced plugs. What’s the pin out on the MKII plug? Thanks

I also have 507. I think the P2 Mk2 is a nice boost in sound quality in terms of cleaner bass, wider soundstage, and perhaps improved clarity. The 2.5mm isnt my fav thing, as I also have everything, including headphones with 4.4mm as well but I still have 2.5mm cables lying around.

The 507 definitely has more meat on its bones though. The midrange is thicker and warmer. Been A-Bing various music all day between the two and that is very distinguishable, but if you have 507, you should already know it's a bit colored with a warmer lower mid-range.

The UI isnt quite as nice as the Sony walkman app though, but its functional. The EQ is better on the Cowon though! And the jeteffects are pretty nice.

EDIT: using the "Superslow" Dac filter does make it sound more warm/thick like the 507 sound.

Sorry, can’t help w/ Mac issue — don’t have one to try.

Gapless — does ‘Remove silence’ on main settings screen not do it? If not, then I don’t know.
‘Time display’ has three options — you want ‘Elapsed+’. Text is really small though. Note that the ‘pointer’ moves left to right as the track plays, so that gives a visual ‘how far along’ indicator.

My Z507 isn't stock however. I mod it with better output wiring including others. It is quite a nice sounding player. My P2 MK2 should get here next Tuesday....so I'm excited to have it.

Found another quirk that’s odd to me.

Settings are:

Skip- Track
Seek- 3 seconds

If a track is paused, and you try to seek using a side button or hold down the touchscreen Forward button, it skips through tracks rather than seeks through the song. If a song is playing it seeks by 3 second increments, appropriately.

Also, what volume level are you guys listening at with IEMs? I’m finding myself in the high 70s to 90s.

Actually, I think Cowon DAPs are somewhat dark horses in my local community and across head-fi, which is quite unfair considering their potential.
Their Plenue line (specifically, P2, P2 mk2 and PL) is simply amazing (among the best, I mean) for people who doesn't care about modern options (streaming, Wi-fi, bluetooth, etc.), doesn't like those trendy smartphonized DAPs and want some distinctive device with sound performance treated as high priority.

Year, Cowon still focuses on overall conservative approach with almost little to no marketing and so on, but it definitely works on some level. Plenue 2 / mk2 / L, imo it's natural progression of top models, have highly customizable UI, top-notch EQ, non-generic design with portability in mind and very underrated neutralish, slightly warm sound with decent technicalities.

So, those three models share nearly identical basis and P2 naturally progresses to P2mk2 then to PL. Let me give some helpful links in the end (like I said, they are very similar after all): Twister reviews on P2, P2 first look, P2 mk2, PL; and discussions PL thread, P2 thread. Also HiFiChris review of Plenue 2 is a comprehensive start to all Cowon thing. :)

Btw, sorry for mistakes and strange expressions, English isn't my native language.
