I finally hit the trigger. S/N 00956. And I'm so glad I did.

The sound reminds me of my Bose QC-25 (1/10 ratio in price) but with crispier detail and wider soundstage. Worth it? Definitely.

I recently made a comparison with my Sennheiser HD800S and Fostex TH900 using my Questyle QP-1R, listening to classical music, pop and soul. I adjusted the volume to take impedance into account. TH900 had a rather similar sound signature but suffered from a weaker mid-range. HD800S was softer, a bit blurred in fact, more laidback without losing focus. Overall, I preferred the SEM1.

Would like to hear it again.
Are the pads similar/same as SEM5?

Has anyone here successfully got the ear pads replaced by Pioneer yet?
Because I have some concerns for the level of aftercare provided for these headphones (within the UK at least). I've owned the SE-MASTER1 since 2016 (S/N 00161), and the ear pads have begun to deteriorate. Every time I have contacted Pioneer about a repair I get no response, and now I'm contacting the Pioneer service centres in my country directly (no replies yet)...

In Japan Pioneer actually collect items to be repaired from your home via a courier, you just have to fill out a form on their website. No such service within the UK.

UPDATE:

Response from one of the so-called Pioneer service centres: " We have had our engineers look into the parts for you and unfortuantley we are unable to get the parts needed for your items. "

I have asked Dekoni Audio many times to make high quality leather earpads for Master 1 but they always ignored it. Even if you manage to find a pair the earpads replacement is very had been told.

This is sad... It would be very expensive to buy a new pair of Master 1s every time the ear pads got worn out. I'm thinking of getting some kind of ear pad protector that has a centre hole just to prolong the life of these pads.

One of the Pioneer service centres in the UK said they actually tried to get the parts from Pioneer directly, but apparently they can't get them. I think anyone outside of Japan who wishes to use these headphones for a long time should take this as a warning.

You can buy higher quality leather earpads only for Monitor 5 .

This is some good news as I was looking to buy the Monitor 5 at some point because I can only use the Master 1 at certain times when it's not noisy in the house.
There is someone from China on eBay who sells the Master 1 ear pads (unlikely official) and I asked him if they will fit the Monitor 5, I'm waiting for a response. By the way, where can I buy the higher quality pads you speak of?

In the official Pioneer headphone parts catalogue above the Master 1 ear pads aren't even listed (just the tension rods and cord), however the Monitor 5 ear pads are.

Thanks, and just in case you're interested here are the Master 1 ear pads I found: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Earpads-Ea...-SE-MASTER-1-MASTER1-HEADPHONES-/143463057541

Go for the Dekoni Elite.
The pads of my SEM5 are a slightly bit bigger than the pads of my Denon D7200.

So the Dekoni's for the TH900 should fit them perfectly.

The pads you've mentioned above have a smaller opening, i think.
This will affect the sound of the SEM1, i guess.
