i have got the feeling that the k701s will slaughter those two and will even give my hd600s a run for its money

Nothing will ever give HD 600 a run for anything. Those will always be holding onto their own.

Thanks for your great comparison!
From my experience with the K701 and the Dt880'05, I can say I agree with everything you've said, except to a slighter degree. With the mids of both cans, I found that the dt880'05 mids were smaller, but only because the k701's soundstage was bigger, so its mids were proportionally bigger too, imo. I also very much agree that the Dt880 has better HF sparkle and more bass authority. That very last trait, along with the superior comfort, is what made me sell the k701 in favor of the dt880s. I DO regret selling the k701 though. I sometimes fantasize that if the funds allow and I can splurge on yet another headphone, I'll get the Heed canamp and k701(God willing of course); that amp supposedly brings out the k701's bass to respectable levels, while widening the already wide soundstage and improving the overall sound.

I did think over what I said after I posted that, and realized that the op's experience may be totally different from mine

Frasey - I was just curious what source and amp you were using when you wrote the comparative review.

Also, donunus, don't confuse the 990's and the 880's. 880's are quite flat but for a mid-bass hump. In fact, per headroom's comparative frequency response graph, they are arguably flatter than the 701's:

Its hearing about fraseyboy talking about the mids that reminded me of the 990 05. I guess the 990-05 is just a more bass and treble version of the 880

I was using my Rockboxed H120 -> Beresford TC-7510 -> Little Dot MK II rig for all the headphones.

Please note that the DT880's I use are the '03 version as well. The comfort of the K701's is a real issue... DT880's and AD700's are just so damn comfortable!

Also probably worth noting that in my opinion the ER6i's best all three of these headphones

They do sound like they'd be pretty good... I'll look out for them on the FS forums. I have a feeling though that they might be more than I'm willing to pay for a pair of headphones.

Then again, I said that about the K701's

I vote that you sell all your current stuff then start buying a Stax setup.

What type of Stax setup? What's the cheapest one which is full size (eg not the SR-001 or whatever that is in-ear since I think they might be pretty uncomfortable)?

Stax setup's need a speaker amp too don't they?

get a stax 3050 system from audiocubes or something. They come with the cans and amp for around 800 I think. You could also try the lower model sonys like the sa1000 or the sa3000 depending on how much you want to spend. They (all 3) are supposed to have the same house sound
