Phonak Audeo (PFE) Thread

I'm a proud owner of PFE112 (greay filter) and I've been in love with them for 4 years.

However, since I've bought a Fiio X3-II, I've started to found them quite agressive in the highs. Cymbals seems to be louder than the rest and they induce some weariness after 2 hours sessions. I'm quite disturbed by the fact that it seems it is time to put them aside and find an IEM with similar signature, and less sparkling/analytical highs

I've been using PFE's for over six years and love them. Recently upgraded to the PFE 232 (grey filter) during a liquidation sale of Audeo stock.
2 weeks I ago obtained a Fiio X5II and can report a similar issue with the cymbals in rock music being pushed to the front of the mix.
Is there anyway to resolve this issue? Personally, I like to listen to music with the EQ off. However, if a little equalization will solve the problem, I am all ears. :)

I have a PFE232 too and pairing it with the Comply T100 tames the highs down a tad. The T130 however adds too much bass to it therefore I prefer the T100 for the PFE232.

Still listening to my 5 years old 012 on a daily basis. I use them with no filters and a 5db cut above 1khz to smoothen them. I'm still impressed by their speed and their tactile sound.  And great build quality obviously. Best 100 bucks I've spent

So, I'm not mad at all, as I have the same impression regarding cymbals. Some of my preferred tracks have become unpleasant because of that.

A few days ago, I pulled my UM3X Westone IEMs out of storage and begun using them with my FiiO X5II.
I was pleasantly surprised by what I heard. I shelved my UM3X IEMs 2 years ago because they sounded too "HOT" with my Cowon J3 and I felt they were damaging my hearing.
With the FiioX5II, they sound just right.

I'll have to A/B compare the UM3X IEMs and PFE 232s on the X5II this weekend.

I will share my results on the forum...

I've tried some weeks ago to remove the filters, and the results was really too agressive for me. I've tried to play with the EQ also to no avail...

The Fiio X3-II did really exposed the small defects the PFE have, which were not so annoying with my old sources. I'll have a hard time to break off with them :)

Here's the link to the measured graphs of Audeo PFE232 and Westone UM3X by Tyll. This should give you an idea of how different both of these sound:

The GoldenEars site is definitely a gold mine, I did not know this site. Their review of the PFE112 is so dead on (http://en.goldenears.net/14068) when I look at the reviewer's opinion chart.

For the Westone UM3X, the treebles definitely appear as recessed when I look the charts. I should get my hands on one pair to test them.

Oh btw, that GoldenEars site you're linking to is the review of the PFE232 and not the PFE112. Here's the link to the PFE112 review: http://en.goldenears.net/2184

Be aware that the PFE232 and the PFE112 sounds very different.

Thank you for the links to the PFE 232 and UM3X graphs. The information presented is very useful!

Treble has always been fine with my sources, but you definitely need to equalize them a lot when not using the filters. A 10 db cut in the treble area is OK IMO. I used to equalize them even with the grey filters because of the forward upper midrange.

I almost pulled the trigger on the Hifiman RE400 recently but they would probably never last as long as the Phonaks...

Does anyone know where to get grey filters for these? I want to buy a pair, but not finding them is deterring me. I'm thinking maybe the grey filters ran out before the stock of actual headphones!

Also, if anyone can give me a rundown on good tips for these? Do no-name Chinese foam tips do the job similar to Complys?
