Went back to target today and after much ado exchanged the she 8000's for a pair of purple 3590's (apparently the succesor to the 3580's)
 
My god these are small. Insertion and seal are a little problematic here. I finally went to the much hated (by me) triflange which fits better than the large tips but does thin the Bass a little. I see much experimentation to be done here.
 
What I am hearing is a fairly neutral sound sig with a little enhancement in the top end. I suspect the Flanges have rolled off the Bass a little. Right now listening to Counting Crows Omaha, I can hear the drum strikes so well I can see the stick marks on the skin. At the high end cymbals are just at the limit of brightness a little further and it would become shrill. Bass guitar good enough to hear each string plucked.
 
Separation on these is just lovely. Imaging narrowed with the tri flange so that is something I need to work on here.
 
Next up more listening tests with different amps. My suspicion is that these will respond very well to an amp.

Comply tips are always a good bet These IEMs take size 400 complys.

funny. i have 2 8000 and i find them BOTH WAY way superior than any 35xx i have tried so far ... yes they are bassier but is not a bloated bass, very precise ? even the Panasonic HJE355 is better... more balanced and the HJE290 has deeper bass -imo... but i have small ears so no need to change the stock medium- small tips maybe thats it?...

Co incidentally I picked up several cases of Complys (use them on my ER4S's) as well as the NR1 and 2 IEMS at a Goodwill store a few years ago. I'll have to see if there are 400's in there. As it is if I invert them they fit quite well with a large tip. That said the 8000 tips were wonderful, wish they used them for the 3590.

I found them SHRILL to the point of actually being painful. Everything was sibilance and sharp as razors. It was so ear fatiguing I completely lost the mids. Perhaps they were a bad pair.
 
Had to love the target dweeb and later the cashier who were pretty adamant that I should be buying Skullcandy. I told them I'd gladly go back and take their advice if they could spell Sennheiser for me

mmm with no EQ i could see them becoming tiresome after a while... not an issue for me luckily ... anyway  im going to see if i can find one of those s1 now, and see how they compare (lol)

Well the original point of this thread was how you could make these $10 buds or any other semi-decent IEMs sound amazing with the right EQ, so I'm not going to disagree with you. You probably found a good EQ setting for the 8000 and not so for the 3580. I'm surprised by these reports of the 8000 having shrill treble though--I had the mic'd version of these, the 8005, and they sounded dull, with muddy bass and mids and a bit less treble than the 3580. Well that's how *I* heard them...

Really starting to wonder if these were genuine or some knock off or just  a plain bad pair. I mean they were dreadful. I tried 4 different sources, 3 DAC's and they were the most harsh things I have ever put in my ears. I might have to try another pair to see if it was a defect.

Bad fit? Or maybe the 8000 is just different from the 8005?

Went through a lot of tips so fit was not an issue. I am as puzzled as anyone.

edit,  some pics  of the box  ... ot least  the claim of superior bass + noise isolation  is spot on imo, lol

We don't get the Espanol labelling up here, but it did have the Canadian Distributors sticker on it. looked to be genuine enough. I am really leaning into picking up another pair to re test. I have always had good experiences with Phillips stuff. Their 4700 ear clips are nothing short of phenomenal when you get a headband on them and locate them securely on the ear.

edit, didnt manage to find a s1 yet, but got a shure se215 and tested it for a day ( different tips, etc)  confused ... so where the hell is the bass punch?  What is this, and how can this crappy cheap  philips iem produce such a superior deep bass? madness.

8000 Saga Continued
 
Okay. So today on my way home I dropped into Wallyworld and picked up (for 5 bucks more i might add) another pair of SHE8000's.
 
Not the same pair of phones at all. These are fairly well balanced with a wee bit too much Bass colouration if anything. The high end has a slight peak leaning to sibilance brought to the front with recordings that usually show it. Try Cowboy Junkies Trinity "Sweet Jane" for a true test of sibilance.
 
Nowhere is the shrieking highs that obliterated the midrange of the previous 8000's. These are warm if anything and do a wicked job of reproducing Knopflers Privateering. Kate Bush Red Shoes you can clearly hear the wetness of Kates lips and again the hint of sibilance that I get with every other phone as well. Strings are crisp and clear, the Bass punch really comes through on this recording.(If anyone has any interest in why I use this particular recording the story is this. When originally recording The Red Shoes she was rather forced into using Digital equipment and was never trully happy with the result. Years later when recording the tracks for Directors Cut someone found the backups for Red Shoes, and they had been saved via analog. She used these as new masters and released Red Shoes as the third disk in the Directors Cut collection) This is probably the only case of an album being released in both digital and analog master modes. This makes it quite unique and useful as a test album.
 
Of note is that the packaging these came in does not have the Canadian Distributors sticker present. That could quite easily have been removed but it does raise the question as to whether the Target bought ones were genuine.
 
I am quite impressed with these little tykes so far and may try playing with some filters over the bass port to adjust the sound a little.

ok just managed to type a huge wall of text and lost it !!!! (on a laptop and portable 3g) again that was really awesome, (review + info)  when im back home im def going to check that albums, thanks!... edit unrelated and maybe of topic... today i got to try the nice (tight skull crushing)  fidelio f1 ( 1200 pesos @ compumundo)  with my old eq phone and electro music for 30+ minutes.. again...not impressed? ok there was like 150+ people in the same room and maybe the crappy nokia x2 dsnt have the power to drive the cans BUT when i entered the room with the 8000 on (  using the small tips)  that sound was still punchier .. .lol .  going to test the x1 next and see how it goes.

I'm going to work with these for a while. It is interesting comparing them to the '90's the first thing is they fit much better than the 90's which I have to wear inverted for some reason. I think overall the 90's are more "polite" in sound quality where'as the 8K's feel like they really want to be let loose to Kick some A**. Tomorrow will be a run through with some classical music such as the Solti Ring. If there is ever a collection of music that covered the entire spectrum of sound that would be it.
 
Odd about the Fidelio's I never thought they were that power hungry.
