For anyone considering these, mass drop is doing a voting between this and 2 other headphones (maybe 3). It has about 80% of the 90 votes (200 max) that are there already. It's almost guaranteed to win the vote. If I were delving into these, I'd vote and see what kind of price they'd be offering.
Nostalgia factor? Lol. Also getting used to the sound signature. There's nothing about HD650 that's better than X2, I had them for a long time. Perhaps mids are more present but not even that much. The lack of sub-bass alone is a dealbreaker.
Perhaps. I was more wondering if there are perhaps production variances that contributed to the HD650 > X2 preference.
I've recently gone on an epic journey auditioning headphones because I can't use monitors for work in my current situation. The biggest point I wanted to make about the X2's is how dramatic the law of diminishing returns is in headphone land. Even more so than with monitors. The X2's sound is far from perfect, but for my preference (warm voicing) I would have to get an LCD-X or LCD-3 to beat the X2 in a significant way. That's a lot more money for some tighter bass and crisper highs, not worth it in my mind.
I have both the HD650 and X2 amongst many. The weird thing is that in 10 years time everyone will still be talking about the HD650, but they will have long forgotten the X2.
Imho there are many reasons for this. I like my X2, yes it's really good and yet I still pick up my HD650 each time. It's just more "right" for some reason
I agree with you, I had the HD650 for two years before buying the LCD2. I have also the X2 right now and I find sibilances and grainy cymbals crashes very distracting with many recordings. The HD650 is technically inferior but more pleasing to my ears. As you would expect I find the much more expensive and power hungry LCD2 faster, more impactful, forgiving of bad recordings and absent of grain.
I think fidelio X2 is very good for the price but I prefer a smoother sounding highs at the expense of soundstage or detail.
The thing is, HD650's highs are rolled-off just like its sub-bass. Its one of the biggest failings of HD650. Mid-bass and mids are what HD650 is about. I don't hear any sibilance with X2, and I'm very sensitive to treble.
LCD3 is obviously great but you can't really compare it considering the price.

I agree with your HD650 description, but I also find the X2 sub-bass rolled off at least compared to other headphones like HE400, HE500, HD800 or LCD2. This two songs sound very sibilant to me with the fidelio X2
I am interested in the X2's and I was wondering in what way are they sibilant with the above linked Youtube tracks?
Listening with my D5000s and A900Xs those records are sibilant for sure, but definitely not in an unpleasant way. I don't mind slightly pronounced ssss's as long as they are smooth and not spikey, shrieky and harsh.
Thanks for the share. FYI: I have listened both youtube albums. All I can hear is sweet X2 sound. I couldn't detect any sibilance but smooth highs only... There should be perception differences or may be hardware differences. So no need to further discuss IMO.
I have owned K702 and DT990. Subbass on X2 is greater than K/Q701 but less impressive than DT990's elevated bass which I find excellent for electronic music but too much with other genres.
