Couple of years ago i bought a used X2 from someone and i didn't like it at all. Very v-shaped, slow muddy bass leaking into midrange, and it died after a while. Today i got a brand new X2HR and man, this is a totally different headphone! Way less v-shaped, nice firm bass, very musical, loving it. Have they changed something going from the X2 to the X2HR or had i just a faulty X2?

I'm tempted to get the HR version. Your old pair, are the pads held in by glue?

You get good sound w/your X2 on an OTL? I'm surprised.

I only tried my X2 on an OTL once (Woo WA3). That enjoyably lush bass of the X2 turned into boomy mush. Once was enough...
I think I'm getting away with it for the 5998/6520 output tube. The sound reminds me of the old records we played in the mid 70's, and with the holiday playlist of that era mixed in, just phenomenal.

Is this (not Philips) jack cable usefull on a X2 or did Philips do something with the wiring like on the X3.

Which 5998? When I swapped out the stock rectifier tube for the Tun Sol 5998 (not cheap!) the WA3 took a big jump in SQ.

Wanted to give my initial thoughts on these, as I just got them and have been using them today:

I had been using the HD560s before this. Those are strong performers as most people who have tried them know. But their tonal qualities are fatiguing if you listen all day to them.

Immediately when switching to the X2HRs, my ears felt relief. The X2s are much easier on the ears than the HD560s. They don't have the hot highs or quite the clarity or detail, but they're very relaxing for all around music listening. The bass does feel like someone bumped it up 5 db.

Sound stage is not as vast as the HD560s but not as closed as the HD600-series either.

All in all, I think they're a great value $150 and under if someone is primary going to be just music listening.

Man, the sweet, sweet sound of my Oct 2014 X2/27 just keeps pouring forth. I often try different headphones, most recently Grado, but just keep sending them all back! No headphone gives me as much listening fun as the X2. Completed my Schiit stack this year with a Loki Mini+ and am completely satisfied. Ooh - I DID buy an X2HR a few months ago as a backup though, but gotta' wear the original out first. That they have lasted this long without problem is a testament to their craftsmanship back in 2014. What a tank. I am doubly glad for this thread and that it still gets some hits on after all this time. Rock on!!

I have both the HD650 and X2 amongst many. The weird thing is that in 10 years time everyone will still be talking about the HD650, but they will have long forgotten the X2.
Imho there are many reasons for this. I like my X2, yes it's really good and yet I still pick up my HD650 each time. It's just more "right" for some reason

This comment didn't age well, lol. Almost a decade later and the X2's are still very well liked headphones :smile_phones:
