PGGB Offline Remastering

Roon does allow the goodness of PGGB to come through.

If I remember correctly, you were a fan of MPD on Antipodes at one time. Have you bailed on that?
I still am but usually playing to it with Audirvana 3.5 or JPlay. The high pitched sound when quitting in the middle of songs is very annoying though. Antipodes said they would look into it but I am not optimistic.

I have yet to hear the high pitch but it could be an age thing.

I think I might actually prefer Roon to MPD/MinimServer/JPlay. I’ve yet to hear the single box implementation you reported liking.

I don't know if anyone is aware of this but the Auralic VEGA G2.2 plays PGGB files at 768/32 via their ethernet connection using UPnP with their LDS app!

It’s advertised spec is 384/32 and Roon will only allow that but UPnP bia the LDS app plays 705 & 768 @ 32 bit

Discovered by chance when setting up a UPnP server for hirez files for the VEGA G2.2. Not sure if it works for the G2.1 or not.

Screenshot of LDS app playing a 768/32 file. Sounds very good indeed!

Playing from NAS, fibre optic to converter then straight into the DAC

Is a linux version on the roadmap?
Also interested in this. I have Roon and HQP in dedicated headless Ubuntu server that has 32gb ram and 13900k. Would ssh there and start batch when I'm not listening. No linux is the biggest obstacle for me. I know I could have double boot just for PGGB, but that hassle, especially considering headless server in storage room... I'm also not a big fan of Microsoft, but that's my personal problem :)

@Rayon @Failed Engineer I reached out to the developer, and it sounds like Linux support is not on the roadmap. Apparently I’m the only person who has asked for Linux support in years, so if this is something you’d like, be sure to let him know!

Personally, my dream would be to run PGGB in a Docker/Podman container on my existing Debian server, alongside all the other applications I run.

Is it better to upsample from a CD or a higher resolution file (such as a legit 24-96 version)? My mind is telling me it's the second option.

Usually using the highest sample rate source material will be best. No point throwing away info that was already there.

However a lot of hi-res stuff was actually just converted from 44.1khz anyway (check using a tool like spek to see if there's actually anything above 22.05khz or not). In which case PGGB is going to do a better job

Thanks. Good tip about Spek too.

Btw reminder for Roon users, remember to vote here: https://community.roonlabs.com/t/1-536mhz-pcm-dsd1024-support/196766

I understand that not all the DACs currently support >768, but you would still help PGGB to grow it's user base, not to mention helping fellow head-fiers :)

With May, the difference between 768 and 1536 is quite big, especially in terms of soundstage size. It would be hard to settle to 768 with May after getting used to 1536 with HQP. Using some alternative method to play those PGGB files isn't very appealing either.

Does anyone have thoughts on PGGB vs PGGB-IT. I'm thinking about long term support, upgradeability etc. Is PGGB going to be the main product and PGGB-IT the spinoff or is PGGB-IT going to be the main product down the line?

PGGB is definitely the main product, and PGGB-It the "spinoff". PGGB-It uses PGGB "under the hood". That said, so far, PGGB-It has kept up quite well with updating itself as PGGB is updated (though usually there is a lag of maybe a few weeks to a few months). PGGB-It also has a couple of unique features that extend PGGB in new ways. An example is multichannel support, which I use myself, and PGGB doesn't have.

Thanks! Going to try the demo with some of my favorite tracks in near future. Your thoughts resonated with my own. If results are amazing enough, will likely pull the trigger. Most likely would process some favourite albums with PGGB to 768 family and then pass them to HQP. HQP would then upsample further to 1.536 and noise shape to 20/24 bit when using PCM, or then use them as input for modulators when using DSD. This would likely be the best compromise regarding to usability as I also love Qobuz->Roon->HQP for streaming. If these files would need to live outside of this ecosystem to feel the benefits, then it becomes too complicated.

EDIT: Just realized that HQP Embedded doesn't support Windows. This just became even more interesting as PGGB and HQP-E need separate operating systems, but I only have one computer for these duties... :)

As I understand it, currently it is at zero cost and license transfers from PGGB-IT to PGGB and it will always remain free. There may be a very small fee for transferring in the other direction, from PGGB to PGGB-IT. Best to could contact the developer of PGGB or Dan at Audiowise for further information.

Sound wise if I would need to use just one word, that would be clarity. Need to do further experimentation as this would mean quite big changes to my setup.

PGGB-IT's folder naming setup seems really nice. When doing batch, especially in headless setup, it's nice if it can organize itself. At least when demoing, plain PGGB seems to put files directly under the given output folder instead of creating subfolders.
