Giving pggb a go.
Is the point to resample to 768 and play via src-dx directly to Dave ?
And for poly - can it play 768 wav files ?
Yup directly to DAVE. SRC-DX only does 24 bits so you should chose that.

And yes Poly can do 768K WAV but only when playing off the SD card using MPD. Roon only allowed up to 8FS last time I tried that.

I resampled planet telex - the bends - first track to wav 192, 24 bit, via usb to Dave as need to retrieve Bnc cables…
I thought the drum fill at the start was easier to follow….
Syro, first track mini pops, there’s a vocal sample that’s very hard to deduce what it’s actually saying, but I thought I got a bit closer to understanding it….

Would going via the mscaler be silly?

I have mscaler all cabled in, via opto-dx, it would suit me to pass an extra set of Bnc inputs to mscaler, then pass that via opto dx to Dave.

I think I can hear more details with pggb than with mscaler.

I’m not averse to simplifying my setup to remove mscaler.

Currently I’m connected via gaming pc -> srx dx -> Dave. But I’d like to get the benefit of separating source and dac via the optical link (opto dx).

I thought passing PGGB through Mscaler took away some of the magic. Others have maybe thought otherwise. The MScaler does reduce gain by 3 dB so maybe that’s the harm I thought I heard. Maybe do your own comparisons but be sure to match levels.

The mscaler reduces it by 3db. If you remove the mscaler you will not have upscaling for streaming. I left the mscaler in but supplied another streamer that fed usb to the TT2 or Dave for the pggb feed. I used my Antipodes EX but even a pi4 could work I think.

I use the analogy of:

if you have an ice-cream maker at home (M-Scaler) why would you buy commercially ready-made ice-cream (PGGB Files) and process it through the ice-cream maker?

Passing PGGB files through the MScaler will effectively undo the work of PGGB's excellent noise shaper.
The PGGB noise shaper is accurate to hundreds of dB lower so it's better not to pass it through the MScaler if you can avoid it

For pggb playback from roon would you suggest roon raat to your dac or roon to hqplayer with passthrough? Do you think hqplayer affects the pggb noise shaping if “none” is selected in hqplayer?

Excellent question. This was good to hear:

“Regarding PGGB and HQP, it is safe as HQP does 64 bit processing and will preserve PGGB’s noise shaping. True with Roon too with all DSP disabled.”

I took the advice and bypassed mscaler.

easily picking out the lyrics and actually almost understanding what the song is about.

Punchdunk lovesick singalong
