I've had many earphones in the past that do many things better than the HJE900. The HJE900 are a good purchase but by no means are they top tier which means there are a good number of earphones that do things better.

IMO that's debatable. The HJE900 have no outstanding strengths like some other top tier phones. But on the other hand they also have no glaring weaknesses. I've heard top tiers with more obvious weaknesses than the Pannys. Having said that, I believe labeling a phone as top tier doesn't provide much useful information in the first place.

Well I think every post on head-fi typically has the imo added to it regardless of if it's in the post or not :p There's very few absolutes in head-fi except that there is no absolute. I find the midrange to be not as good as the highs and the bass. I typically keep things stock except for these phones. I don't think I've modded any other earphone at least to my memory. I didn't like the recessed in the midrange and to mod it to balance it out a bit makes it a weakness in my book. I guess top tier isn't very helpful for anyone other than me since I know what I consider top and that's very different than everyone else's

On another note you should be happy to know that I've kept them and have not sold them yet :p ...although they don't get that much ear time lately but that's another story. I even bought a separate cable for them ;p

Well I like the Pannys without a mod. The only reason I got the SA6 cable for them was a fit issue (its stock cable is the first one to give me fits). We all definitely have our views on what top tier is. I mean, there are some standard universals that it seems like the majority of regulars agree on as being top tier (maybe about three I can think of that seems to be a consensus), and then it's a free for all.

Unfortunately rawrster, saying IMO (in my opinion) generally doesn't carry any weight in head.fi.org anymore. Some may still take you to task for having your own opinion....lol.

This is no lie, but some head-fier (I'll spare his name unless he decides to reveal himself) early this week decided he needed to take me to task in pm for my opinion. He first asked me to name five Miles Davis albums I thought were the best. I did. His response was that my list told him a what he thought about me already because I didn't list an album he considered his favorite from a certain time period by Miles. I then - against my better judgment - asked him what was the point of asking me for my list on Miles albums. He went into a diatribe  about how I need to humble myself because of my thoughts on the Klipsch Custom 3 (on a thread that I no less started as the OP...lol). So I showed that I was arrogant because I like the C3 and consider them a top tier, and gave my reasons why on a thread that I originated. Now, how does that connect to the top five Miles Davis' albums I like?? Your guess is as good as mind. I gave that that person too much time in my inbox (as I'm doing here), and in the end I jus "lol...Peace."

So, this is what we have come to. You are wrong for giving your opinion and make it clear it's just your opinion in some cases here. I found what happened to me amusing. It's no swipe at you or James @ rawrster.

I think most of the vets here have no problems accepting individual opinions, but a little egoism regarding one's own taste is inevitable everywhere. Best you could do is try to educate, if that falls through no more is worth the trouble.

I bought the cable for comfort and length of cable. It no longer feels heavy since the stock cable pulled on my ears due to the long metal connector.

Also I don't think anyone is going to attack me for my opinion..hopefully

I'm a pretty level headed reasonable guy (well at least I like to think so). It definitely didn't seem like a swipe at me or james so no problems on my end.

Hilarious Eric!  You're like a crap magnet man, lol.  You should just walk around w/ your middle finger politely extended at all times.  Works for me.

On another note, do you Americans ever sleep? Just wondering.

No, its part of the puritanical protestant work ethic that keeps us up late surfing for porn.

Hey Confispect, how come your opinion changed so dramatically!? I'd bought a pair on FS forum, and after reading your initial impression I was a little worried. Was it just burn-in? (psychological or otherwise). I can't understand how you can go from almost bagging it out, to thinking they're close to perfect

No, not in this economy @ James. Sleep? What is that?? No, he hasn't revealed himself yet, unless he has more than one name in head-fi.org.

Sorry for the caps (keyboard malfunction, lool)

Like Conspi... says:

What another phone would have to bring to the playing field.

NATURAL

TIMBRE

lush but clear, mids

nice highs, sparkle and such, exclude harshness if you like.

nice punchy bass that goes deep, with a nonexsiting mid bass hump or a slight hump whichever is perfered in the land of warm (Bass is weird so won't go into details)

instrument separation/timbre/reverb

Ability to pinpoint

Speed

A few peeps are saying 'yes' there are phones which do something better than the pannies...

Well , what are they ? models & what exactly do they do better?

I am not trying to debate.... but since being new to iem's I'm very curious if there are 'better ' sounding phones than the pannies & why are they exactly better to you guys.....?

Thanks Confispect for the reply. I wasn't sure in your reply if you meant the Super.fi was the recommended tips for the CZs. I'm a bit confused because the UE Super.fi's (e.g., 4, 5) appear to have a different color tip than the UE Triple.fi's (10) and wasn't sure if it was just an aesthetic difference versus a functional one.

I was wondering the same thing the other day Ive came to this. Tips, Mind burn-in, and maybe driver burn-in. I don't know though with the driver thing I think the only thing that happened is the treble tamed a good bit. Or maybe my mind was getting used to it, have no clue.

(I agree, present me with a armature driver that can give you naturalness, and timbre like this. Dfkt related it to the IE8 and the Jvc -fx700, so who knows but personally I think the monster pro gold would do it....don't know though as of not ever hearing it.
