Oriolus Hybrid IEM

Really great review, alffla. I especially do agree with you on how a little more body to the vocals can be desired at times (with the Chinese version cable). My impression is that with the PW No.5 cable, the mids become more forward, you gain a bit more depth at the expense of width and a bit of air. If you have the chance, I do recommend you check it out.

I think your review really captures the sonic characteristics of the Oriolus in just 2 words: natural and effortless. No matter which kind of music I throw at it, the Oriolus admirably reproduces them with clarity and detail no less than what my JH13 is capable of, while at the same time not ripping the tracks apart. It's such an easy sound to listen to and yet I am at ease knowing that I'm not missing anything.

Btw, I'm really inclined to check out the Andromeda, but from the sound of it it does not look like it'd be as good an all-rounder as the Oriolus is. What do you think?

Thanks for the cable impressions. I've thought of upgrading to the PW cable many times, but don't want to change the already stellar tuning and air the original Chinese cable gives. While I love my mids, the airiness is what makes this IEM so special, so I'm not going to sacrifice any of that.

Thanks! Glad you liked the review. Haven't had a chance to try the cable, but will post back here if I do!
Definitely agree that the Oriolus doesn't sound artificial at all despite its hybrid config.

Hm..Andromeda is interesting. It's not my personal favourite, but I know people who love it, and it's also one of the more unique sounding IEMs I've heard so far. In fact all of CA's offerings are very unique. Very clean and (I don't know if I'm just psychologically influenced by it's housing material) ... but they do sound sort of metallic, like the sounds are resonating in an extra bright and sharp way.

Andromeda goes very low and very high, but every frequency range just seems to be reproduced in a very tight and clean manner. I think it's a love it or hate it kind of sound.

Ditto. Coupled with my newly acquired AK120ii on SE, I get all the airiness and soundstage I need in an IEM. The PW Audio No 5 has really nice ergonomics though, soft and supple. If I can get the sound of the Chinese version one in the form factor of the PW, I'd be willing to pay a pretty penny for it.
And I don't think the mid is in anyway inadequate with the Chinese cable either. It still feels pretty forward and emotional, and "wide", for the lack of a better word. The PW's mid may be more intimate, emotional and appeals to people who come from the like of the TG334!, but it doesn't give that unrestrained feeling of the other one. I'd still recommend people to check out the PW cable though, different strokes for different folks after all.

And btw that's really some praise for the Oriolus, given how impressive your inventory is :D

I have the Oriolus for 3 weeks now, it really impressed me how this sounds great detail in mid and highs. Bass is tight and punchy and is not overwhelming. Finding the right ear tips could be difficult and I am using spinfit(M) it does the job for me.

It just seems like everything being sold in Japan/US sites is about ~$250 more (ignoring PW/OEM cable difference). What gives?

From what I know is the cable is different...

Oct 8, 2016 at 2:07 PM Post #465 of 1,871
the difference is in the cable..the iem itself is the same..

Well, its about $800-850 (give or take) bucks in China with the OEM cable, and in Japan ~$1300 (with PW#5 cable). So a $450-$500 difference just in the cable? I think its $1050 in Japan with the OEM cable, so there is still a discrepancy of about $200-250.
