Oppo PM-3 : The Portable Planar - Impressions
May 20, 2018 at 9:14 PM Post #5,551 of 6,302
Yeah, I've found they scale some. They don't seem to need much power, though. When I first got them, I used them straight out of a first gen. Fiio X5 and thought they sounded congested, like you said. Particularly on busier, more complex tracks with some bass. I got the Fiio E12A and it sounded much better.

Yeah i i tried them out of the cayin iha6 and they seem to scale quite well.

For the headband replacement, Beyerdynamic has replacement pads for their headphones that might work. Or maybe this one? They have others, too, but the ones I linked look nicest (to me) and seem like they'd be simplest to try. Don't know if the DT 770/880/990 have the same sized headband, but my DT 1990 is just about the same size as the PM-3.
I was also looking at Reddit, and people were recommending fixes like bicycle/tennis racket grip tape, iron-on patch cloth, and even heatshrink fabric tubing.
Hi, what material is the BeyerDynamic replacement made of ? Do I just fix them over my existing headbands?

Yes, the old pads are ruined.

First, the faux-leather is already glued to the inside ridge of the ‘clip-ring’ as you may have noticed, so this needs slicing to get the pads off. Secondly, the thin membrane that covers the driver, in the center of the pad, is quite firmly double taped to the ring also, so pulling that off makes a fair old mess of the old pads (well, it did in my case).

Glue was just a general purpose glue without any solvent from the kids art supplies :) - it doesn’t need much.

I might suggest you practice re-attaching the pads a few times before you start making the mod, for me this was by far the most difficult bit.

Hi, is there a way to attach without removing the old pads, just to try on? Is the angled version better or the non angled version better? Is sheepskin leather durable? My earpads are slowly cracking.
I had not wiped off after using. Anyways, I never got much dampness/sweat on them. It might be humidity / heat in the local weather that caused it. A friend suggested that I keep the PM3 in a humidity controlled cabinet. I guess that would not mitigate the effect of heat. I am quite new to the modifications and wish there were a video

. Is this method correct? I bought my pair in 2016

Yeah, I popped mine off like this. I found (very carefully), sliding a knife under helped pop the earpads off. Then I just put new brainwavz sheepskin pads completly over the cups. They seem to seal really well, and it allows you to test new pads without destroying the originals. I also find the Brainwavz pads significantly more comfortable. A big thank you to this thread for the idea!!

Hi, could you please post photos of your oppo pm3 with the brainwave pads ? Are you using the angled or non angled ones ?
Is sheepskin more durable than synthetic leather of the stock ear pads ?

I'm using the non-angled ones. I have a pair of the angled ones too, and I tried them. They shounded great, but I just find the non-angled a littel more comfortable. I have huge ears, so most people probably won't have the same issues I did. Not really sure about durablility, but I just like the feel of the sheep skin better. So that, plus the larger earhole opening in the Brainwavz pads has been great for me.

Hi, is there any difference in sound between the angled and non angled version ?
Thanks

Yeah, I would give the edge in soundstage to the angled. Not a huge difference to my ears, but the angled were slightly better. If the stock pads are an ok size for your ears, then you should be more than fine with the angled. I found the non-angled to be more confortable, so the trade off was worth it to me.

Headband materials are in the links. Sorry, don't know how these things would work, if at all. I was just brainstorming.

Also, don't assume that just because the PM-3's synthetic leather falls apart that all synthetic leather will do the same.
