no, the particular one i'm talking about is definitely cutting edge and will remain so for quite a while, but i'm saying that the basis for this tech is bubbling up all over in the diyaudio field currently, with probably 4-5 boards/projects (they tend to be complete projects due to nda/IP issues with the dsps and development software)  released in the last month of varying spec (but all async 2-4 channel 32 bit 192khz minimum). this is already making its way into commercial products and will continue to gain momentum, i expect coax etc to remain as a legacy support feature only, because to do it properly takes a lot of time and a more complex circuit, compared to what can be attained with a fairly simple, but carefully laid out design with less.

I've had one of these for a few weeks now and loving it. Its output through coaxial sounds far better to me than the optical from a Mac. It just sounds smoother and more musical- more like the sound from a TDA 1541 Marantz chipped CD player that I have slowly come to appreciate. It seemed to integrate the sub i use with studio monitors. Before it sounded slightly boomy, but now it (the sub) seems to have disappeared, leaving me with bass extension. I blamed the Lavry DA11 I was using, but now I can't fault it. It sounds great. I can't detect any difference between the USB SPDF output and the classic ipod with lossless output.

I'm using the stock japanese PSU that is 100 to 240V. I have a Hypermac 220 ah lithium battery designed to power a Macbook, i bought recently when my power needs where different. It has a USB output that I thought could possibly power the the ND-S1, but I suppose that's limited to 500 ma. Otherwise i think it outputs 15 volts. Feel like making me a few cables qusp?

Has anybody compared the ND-S1 to the Pure i20?

Isn't the USB port on the ND-S1 just for syncing the iPod to a computer? I think the coax out is just for the iPod.

Whenever I use the Coax or Optical out (usb in from pc) I hear this weird clicks in the music.
It's not really blanc points, it's during playback inside the music "taktaktaktak" No idea what it is but it sucks, so I don't use it.
I guess it's not a great usb to spdif convertor.

any tips?

The plot thickens, it would be nice if there was more info/specs regarding using the ND-S1 as a usb/spdif converter.

I've been using nds-1 with both iPhone 3GS and ipad2 since coming out with extent ion cable. But recently neither my phone or pad recognizes the NDS-1 being plugged in to them. Is there a hard reboot of the nds1that can be done?. Ugh
