  Has anyone managed to reroot after applying this update? If so, how?

Since TWRP was still installed, even after the update, I think all I had to do was reinstall the SuperSU and Xposed Framework .zip files.
 
Everything seems to be working at least as well as before the update (and I even updated to the latest Xposed Framework).

 just received in post this onkyo thing and im not happy, though its probably user error, it seems really quiet, i  have an astell kern ak100 mk 2 and its so much louder, im using sony mdr z7s, does this have a volume cap , can it be removed , please help im feeling pretty mortified presently and just joined as someone may be able to help,

I run mine with MDR-Z7's at normal gain and get plenty of volume, check you gain settings in setup.

I have been listening to my HE1000 (planar mags) connected to a V281 headphone amp using balanced connectors and I've been very happy with the sound.  I ordered a 2.5mm to 4-pin balanced cable so I could try connecting the HE1000s directly to my DP-X1 without using a separate amp.
 
I used High Gain, Balanced output (vs. AGC) and I was surprised how well it drove the headphones.  They are listed at 35ohm impedance.  I still prefer running through the amp, since it seems to have just a bit more air and bottom end, and it allows more control over quiet tracks.  However, I can listen to most tracks with plenty of headroom and drive the volume to unlistenable (is that a word?) levels.

 Have been in the market for DAP and zooming in on my choices and is quite drawn to either Onkyo DP-X1 or the XDP-300r.
 
By pure luck and as the stars aligned, I did a search on a local Carousell and found a user having an extra set to sell and it's an unbox unit of DP-X1a ordered from Japan! We traded a few chats and swiftly closed the deal!

I have been charging mine using an Anker 21,800 mAH power bank a couple of times a week for over six months now. I believe a good power bank is in fact safer than using a mains charger as there is no risk for voltage spikes and could be cleaner, too.

Moon Audio has a special on the Onkyo DP-X1 now. I really liked the sound of this player but had problems with the battery in my original purchase. It just didn't last that long no matter how many programs I turned off. Is this still a problem with device or can I purchase another and get more than 3-5 hours out of a charge?

I contacted Moon Audio a while ago about getting an Onkyo DPX1 and the owner told me that they will not accept a return if the device is defective.  He told me I would have to deal with Onkyo.  He was rude and appeared to have a bad attitude.  I cannot recommend them.  I also talked with him on the phone and same thing.  Just citing my unlucky experience with them.  Not advising anybody or making subjective or opinionated statements.  So I did not consider purchase there after that.  Not saying Moon Audio is bad or anything just citing my personal experience with them.  I am sure Moon Audio is fine I probably just caught the owner on a supper busy or a bad day.

Haven't had mine long enough to have a concrete comment on how long the battery lasts. But wondering if you have given the "Stand-Alone Mode" or dim the screen a try? I find the connectivity options (WiFi etc) and screen are the ones that consumes the battery and the "Stand-Alone Mode" just focus the unit to audio and cut off the rest. I do have to remind myself to use the physical dials and buttons and avoid fiddling with the screen (blame it on overt-use-of-smart-phone-syndrome).

It was not really advice.  I was just sharing my personal experience with them.  I am making no claim to how good they are to deal with or otherwise.

the new clearance price for the dpx1 is $600 as it has been discontinued. I think it was 550 over black friday. So theres a few places to get that price
