Open source code is pre-compiled code.
You will not have access to that even if you root your device.
For an example of open source code, take a look at Github.

I know GitHub, been contributing to open source communities for 15 years :)
Open-source comes in many forms, it's a philosophy but also first and foremost a different take on software licensing. Pre-compiling code is pretty much opposite to the open source philosophy as it makes it not...open ;)

Maybe the code is pre-compiled as far as the DAC features is concerned, but probably not all of them. I am not an android developer but I know I looked up a lot of config files on the XDP-100, I was looking at bypassing the volume table set for the EU model.

Sigh.
Config files contain the configuration parameters of an Android app/system, not the actual code itself.
The code in software files are definitely compiled.

Let me give you an example. Let's take an apk - in the context of Android.
The code written by the developer is in Java - this is the source code.
If you then want an Android device to read this code, it is necessary to compile it into *machine-code*!!
Devices cannot read java code - even if they could it would be terribly inefficient.
This machine-code, however, is extremely hard for us to interpret.
You may attempt to obtain the original source code (AKA reverse-engineering), but this is terribly tedious.

This is getting terribly off-topic so I'll end this here.
We may continue this discussion via private message if you so wish.

Ok, woke up, saw two new pages on here.

You guy's have been busy!

Awesome heads up Orky261 on the OTA update, will do that once I get my unit.

Great early impressions too Cagin, especially against the Sony ZX2 ;)
I will take due care when applying my Onkyo DPA-GL033 tempered glass screen protector on to my DP-X1 too.

I posted on FB my thoughts about the Massdrop AK100 MkII deal Yubacore; for an AK that's a sweet deal, but compared to the Onkyo DP-X1 it's ridiculously expensive whether discounted or not. Bear in mind that Gizmag has announced that the Onkyo DP-X1 will be released around April in the US at $899.99, so though the import price is amazing, I still believe that at $900 the DP-X1 stands alone as a new benchmark of TOTL DAP's (Questyle QP1R is the other).

Congrats Zenifyx and badwisdom on receiving your Onkyo DP-X1 units! ^^
Did you get charged with customs?
Do you like the device?
:D

To Sonic Defender, and davidmolliere; the third party apps that use the CPU for taking a digital audio signal and digitally manipulating that signal via CPU before analogue conversion via DAC is just that.
No hardware company (like Google, Onkyo, Sony, etc) will create a special code in the OS for just a few of these apps to make sure they perform as the vast majority of apps do; use existing DAC's in a device.
The reason apps like Neutron use the CPU is because that is its reason of its existence; it is a speciality niche (and wonderful) app designed solely for use with CPU, not DAC.
The onus is solely, completely, with the app developers of such apps.
All other apps that use the Android OS to route audio to a DAC will do so as normal. In the case of DP-X1, that's a FANTASTIC THING!
It would be awesome if Neutron developers made a sister app that has some features of Neutron but uses a hardwares traditional DAC use...that would be cool.
Zenifyx is also very correct too on this subject. In regards to looking at Onkyo code NOPE, that's not going to happen. It's not something Onkyo should code in either as they have coded in what vast majority of apps should do for audio playback. Bear in mind that Onkyo have made a custom OS so that AGC, balanced, Line Out, Stand Alone modes are linked directly into the hardware (just like WiFi, Bluetooth and volume are). So they will not release such code. The OS is, however, still Android at it's core. Best of EVERYTHING! Love you ONKYO <3

Hi heliuscc, I ordered from PriceJapan.com with Onkyo DPA-GL033 tempered glass screen protector and DPA-PUX1 leather case. The leather case is released in Japan later this month so is a separate parcel.
I will know in the next few hours how much my custom charges are :/
And yeah davidmolliere, I declared lower costs. Not sure if that helped reduce or worsen my costs, we'll see...

  Hey guys,

received it this morning !!! Its quite a stunning piece for the price. Impressions later. However, anyone using this on a mac ? I can't see a way to transfer music :(

Lucky you :)

I don't know if Onkyo has a Mac app but you should be able to just plug it and transfer files either with the finder or with Android File Transfer.

Oh thank you i needed Android File transfer :)

I was getting really worried that this wouldn't work on a mac lol.

Anyway, 3 days delivery to France (impressive) and a total of 15 days between order (fast option) and reception. Very very AWESOME.

Oh and 44€ Customs for a 120$ value. Rip off !!

When did yours arrive?

I have confirmation my package is held by customs and I should get a call today... arhhh :(
I suspect I won't get them this week and on top of that going to be pricey.
Definitely go Fedex next time.

So wait, would an app like the MX player be able to utilise the DAC?

Yes, as that is designed just like app games, YouTube, Tidal, Spotify, SoundCloud, BBC iPlayer, etc.

It's an app designed to route audio to Android as normal.

You're ok.

Someone else many, many pages back was able to play MX Player on DP-X1 with incredible SQ!

Any app can utilize the DAC.
However there are distortion in sound when using apps other than stock.
This post demonstrates the issue quite well: http://www.head-fi.org/t/780642/onkyo-dp-x1-dual-sabre-dacs-balanced-sabre-btl-amp-mqa-dsd-256-android-5/2250#post_12176766

BOOM

Gizmag has released information about the Onkyo DP-X1 being released internationally, well the US, around April.

Cost? $899.99.
(Remember, I called and predicted it first, multiple times, in these last few pages of this thread! Where are my gold stars folks?).

Here's the official US Onkyo DP-X1 link too.

So there you have it. Even then I think the Onkyo DP-X1 US price is pretty good.

However, to those who have imported the DP-X1 have done so at MASSIVE SAVINGS!

Anyone seriously thinking of getting this unit, and are not perturbed with warranty, DO SO ASAP before prices go up (importing or when it arrives internationally)!

Just to add, even with PriceJapan.com's extra fees, and my extra costs for the official DPA-GL033 glass screen protector and official DPA-PUX1 leather case (the latter is being released later this month) it is STILL cheaper than the proposed $899.99 US price!
Some users got all three and spent extra on expedited shipping, and that is again cheaper still than $900!

OK
OK
Pushed the button, you know it makes sense
