Some nowadays DAPs are actually better than DPX1A in any aspect: Output power, battery life, sound quality, and diverse selection of outputs,... I've tested out Hiby R5 II and that thing was amazingly solid for its price tag.
I am mostly using the top shelf players nowadays. My taste and IEMs have evolved. I now go for refinement and natural sounds. That said. Onkyo made stuff 10 years ago that still holds its ground today. Imagine if they didn't give up and quit the race.

On the Onkyo Wikipedia page, there's this comment - "A professor noted in The Asahi Shimbun that Onkyo prioritized its manufacturing quality to the detriment of its adaptability to market conditions, with the advent of the smartphone killing off the middle segment of the hi-fi market." - and I read other things that said they had stayed focused on physical media playback, when the market was moving to streaming.

Japanese are known for being too stubborn and perverse. It's a good thing that they only focus on the quality aspect, instead of chasing something new. But the audio scene and market have been changing drastically, they were too slow to swerve.
Yikes. My first Hifi was an Onkyo. They offered a great starting point for beginners.
Austin. I have a lot of experience working in Japan. In many corporate cultures. They don't like change much. There is also this thing where they tend to look at things through the Japanese lens. In the last two decades, we've seen a lot of brands lose their relevancy outside of Japan.
Ten years have passed and it is very sweet to read the first messages of this thread. How much will it cost? When will it come out? Will it be able to drive my headphones? Will it outperform the Astell&Kern AK380 that costs too much? All questions that have gradually found answers. The reviewers who guaranteed it could drive everything even unbalanced from the height of its 75mw X2 (LOL), to the fact that it was too heavy and bulky (LOL). Since then everything has changed... but nothing has changed. Where can I buy the case? Only in Japan? What are the best microsd? The certified 200gb ones or can I use something else? And then the first photos of the broken 2.5mm connectors... does it really break that easily? The Onkyo DP-X1 in the world of audiophilia was my first love and as such it is never forgotten. Mine is almost ten years old now, the 200gb microsd, its cover and even its very powerful 1650 mah battery that still lets me listen to two albums with 15% discharge. UAPP no longer works... I can only listen through its native app. Everything has changed but the DP-X1 is still the dap that I love the most... the first and unforgettable dap. Few things have not changed in these ten years... its magical sound that now passes through a PULA PA02, the emotions that arise from listening to it, and then the music that like the Onkyo still accompanies my days. Thank you DP-X1, thank you so much!!!
The Onkyo was so good I got my first custom in ears from Aurisonics… Miss you Andy and team, now part of the Fenderverse and/or scattered [but I heard the Dynamic Driver Doctor is still cooking up designs…?]
Campfire Audio, taking real good care of me right now on the WM1AM2, the DP-X1(a)s only real successor
Is there any reason to get this over an iBasso DX180? I've heard this still sounds very good in the modern market, but I don't know if its all-around functionality holds up as well.
