Hey Onky’s,

Question - Is DPX1 or DPX1A able to still stream from Tidal, Quobuz, Apple Music, and or Spotify as of present-day, given its early Android Version 5-point-something based-OS; or must I now expand my horizons beyond these two devices in my current quest to hone an ideal primary-streamer / hi-res music-streaming-enabled DAP ‘par-excellence?’

Mucho Gusto,
Ian

I can answer your question for Qobuz and Spotify running on my rooted DP-X1 (Android 5.1.1 / Kernel 3.4.0 / Build LMY47V):
Qobuz plays fine in the native app (v6.5.0.2), and in UAPP v7.0.3.8.
Spotify v8.9.76.538 plays fine.

You have 2 options:
1. Find the old version of the native Qobuz/Tidal application for Android 5.0+ on apk supply websites such as: apkmirror, apkpure,.... I don't recommend this since the audio quality is interfered by Android system
2. Buy UAPP for Qobuz + Tidal streaming bit-perfect audio quality from the source. Or download free Hiby Music app for Tidal streaming only.
It's up to you.

Thanks for the response! So as long as I buy UAPP to stream Tidal or Qobuz through it, having an outdated version of Android shouldn’t matter? In other words, as long as UAPP still runs with the android version the device has?

Correct. I'm still using my UAPP for streaming Qobuz on my DPX1A.

When I check the specification of Onkyo Dp-X1A, I don't see 2.5mm and 3.5mm output voltage. There are only 150mW and 75mW information.
How much is output voltage of outputs?

Hello friends, do you have any information about this subject? I don't see 2.5mm and 3.5mm output voltage. There are only 150mW and 75mW information.

Found my wife's old DP-X1. It just works, charged up and the battery is holding a charge just fine. Tidal is streaming. Heck. It sounds better than the entry level DAPs from today. I can hear the nuances, the staging is TOTL wide. I had an AK70 and that one stopped streaming many years ago. I never bought another AK again.

The only thing that reminded me that this thing is ancient. That micro USB port.

Yes I agree, and I kinda prefer it to my WM1AM2, maybe warm sound is not my thing. Are there any modern DAP that are similar to the DP-X1?

From the experience I've had with my various DAPs & DACs, the ESS Sabre DACs seem to be slightly less "warm" than the R-2R, AKM, and Cirrus Logic circuits.
Are you looking in the same $500 - $600+ price range as the DP-X1 was in 2016/2017? If so, maybe check the FiiO M11.
If you're looking for a less expensive DAP, maybe check the HiBy R4.

I just happened to have tested quite a bunch of sources. Basically everything I own at this point.

IMHO. The Hiby R4 is not an upgrade to the DP-X1 sonic wise. If on a budget. The Fiio M15S can be had for as low as 350 used.

For modern balanced sound. I prefer the 8x CS dacs to ESS. IBasso DX260 and Cayin N6iii are both I have own(ed). The DX260 is a little drier and cheaper. The Cayin cost more. But is very well built, great battery life, sounds a tad richer and more dynamic, but not by much. You can also swap cards as they become available.

Thanks for the recommendations! May I ask, if price was not a concern, which would you guys recommend? Thank you :)

I am like you. I don’t like the warm, smooth AKM sound.

Personally. I would recommend you look at 1
Bit dacs. Currently, it’s iBasso D16 and Cayin N7. I have both. It’s so natural and effortless. It’s the most refined sound. IBasso is pending the release for the DX340 soon. Last pestering. They are saying mid-late December. Delayed due to parts availability issues. Wait for that before deciding.

The D16 is a balanced sound. Wide, technical, deep extensions both end. The DX340 will be based on the D16’s Dac. Cayin N7 is a warmer, richer, darker sound. Both are very high resolving and organic sounding. Treble just appears in mid air. No sharpness whatsoever. They both bring out the emotion in the music like no other.

I read a review and measurement of the DPX1A sibling, the Pioneer XDP-300. They measured the output of the 2.5mm as 3.9Vrms and the 3.5 as 2.0Vrms. You can read more here. Measurement's report Pioneer XDP-300R Balanced Out - Reference Audio Analyzer. I'm pretty sure DPX1A might have similar measurements as well.

Some nowadays DAPs are actually better than DPX1A in any aspect: Output power, battery life, sound quality, and diverse selection of outputs,... I've tested out Hiby R5 II and that thing was amazingly solid for its price tag.
