Yes this does suck, how dare the manufacturer change the warranty after purchase. I will register my protest by not buying anymore HiFfiman products. I am very sad.

A solid plan.

I notice you have the Yggdrasil and Ragnarock in your signature. Have you noticed a difference with the HE1000 upgrading to the Yggdrasil? It is on my radar as a DAC upgrade as it is $2000 cheaper than the Auralic Vega. If it pairs well with the HE1000, I think it might be my next purchase.

As a side note, is that you in your profile picture? If so, wicked beard mate!!

Also, I could swear there was 3 years warranty last time I checked... Now there's only 1 year

My manual says three years on page 17.

I just downloaded the HE-1000 owner's manual pdf today (10/9/15) from the download page on the HiFiMAN website.  Here's what I cut and pasted from page 17 the manual:

Warranty
Your HE1000 is warranted for a period of three years from date of purchase
.
The warranty is not transferable. Should you need warranty service please contact us using the information shown in
the Contact section. Should your headphone need to be returned for service, return shipping is at
the owner’s expense.
Note: Do not disassemble or modify the headphone in any way. Except for the cable and ear
pads, there are no user-serviceable parts. Tampering with or modifying your HE1000 will void the
warranty.

Hello hope you are well. My yggy and rag make my HE1000 sing like a bloody muse of old. The yggy adds such textured clarity to the sound. I hear stuff in the music that I have never heard before. All the while, the sound never losses its musicality. The Yggdrasil was my first dac, to really floor me with the change in sound quality. To me its very addicting, like a audio drug, just do not want stop listening. Sorry mom, for got yea needed out of the bath, had to hear that last track of the Zappa. And when you take the sound out of yggy and add it to the rag, the sound is magical to behold. I say go for the Yggdrasil, you will not be disappointed.
And yes that is my beard, been growing it for 16 years and sometimes it has a life its own. Lol :D

Quote:
I thought the warranty was for three years??? Have they really changed it to one year? Or is this some sort of mistake?

EDIT: It is three years. From the manual below. Where are you guys seeing it is one year?

Hopefully it is just a mistake then

Here's what I think caused the confusion, which is understandable. The link in the quote box above goes to another page about the HE-1000, which has THIS statement near the bottom:

Warranty Policy

30 days refund: shipping cost is not refundable.
1 year replacement: Customers will pay shipping cost.

(As a bonus, I enlarged the font and made it bold for the word "replacement.")

So to me that would mean that after the first year is over, it's still covered, but will be repaired, not replaced, for the remaining two years on the warranty.

High End Pricing
Many many years ago I talked to A. J. van den Hul and he explained the pricing of his latest super cable like this.
Target sales before profit: 1000m
Cost of machines to do all that insulation, braiding etc: $375,000
Cost of material - he didnt say - lets go with $25/meter
Cost to public: $410/meter with mostly profit if the 1000m target is passed.

Now obviously he could have chosen 2000m and sold for $210 a meter - he based 1000m on the previous premium model sales.

This is why companies can come out with a "flanker" cheaper product or range not long after (HEX)
You can reduce the material costs so as to place the cheaper model in the market below your premium product and you particularly get rid of some of the more expensive "premium look and feel" bits - leather, wood etc.
You reduce any specialist machining/parts costs per unit because you're using the same machines/suppliers - your main outlay - over two or more models. Plus the lack of "premium" means you potentially sell more units to those more interested in "best buy" sound quality of the cheaper model.

Slow evolution of existing products doesnt cost as much. You can get brilliant sound for not much from the latest version of an older design.

I agree completeley with Negura that as "components" (interconnect/mains/headphones) move into the marketing spotlight companies often start to play the silly mark-up and "a market leader needs a large premium" price games.

DIY building you own headphones isn't going to take off (unless you're Dan) - you cant buy the components the same you can for an amplifier.

As always, listen often and try to ignore any "higher price = better sound" message.

People who buy $3K HPs dont even know what kind of warranty they have. And we expect a market system based on consumer vigilence to work. Yeah sure ...
Dream on .. and say bye to your cash.

What appears to have been the source of the confusion was explained in this post

Now that we know the Hifiman team are reading all the related threads, hope they're taking hints from the Edition-X thread to lower the price point to make it a success
