New TOL A&K DAP : the AK Ultima SP1000

Tell me frankly: - Do you want to try to hear the difference in sound on different firmware versions?
I cannot hear what is not there to my ears.
Other external things do have an influence much greater. Even wearing glasses and removing them. But firmware to date I have heard no change. Of course you may well have but this is a rarity.

Lol, the I can hear you can’t hear firmware nonsense again. So AK is conspiring to change the sound, so us SP1000 owners sell their DAP, So we can go and buy the SP2000? Yeah uhm I ain’t buying that.

The only thing that might make me consider the sp2000 over my sp1000 would be improved wifi reception. I'm not hearing the love for 2k wifi as of yet.

What we are seeing is not AK saying anything of the kind. What we are seeing is a few people claiming to hear sound differences with different firmwares, which AK has always said is not the case. And, in fact, we have seen two people here recently claim they have found a way to revert to an earlier firmware. Even if we accept these claims, the first person to make the claim bailed out after saying so and, before he left, said that AK wanted to know how he got ahold of the earlier firmware. The second person simply said he did so. Obviously, hacking and illicit obtainment of firmwares is happening there if it is indeed true. Now, as an iPhone hacker for years (since retired) I'm not pointing fingers, but let's agree that just the manner of reverting might affect sound. A few others say they hear differences after updating (Twister did one time, I believe) but the vast majority of us do not.

I see no reason to buy a 2000 unless you want to run hard-to-drive phones or iems with it that can't be driven as well on the 1000.

You're funny. Don't mislead people with stories about hacking firmware. Any A&K specialist will tell you that firmware exists in the form of update.hex file
Simply copy it to the root of the main memory and the system informs you that it is ready to be updated. This is a practice for many years.
And yes, dude. Stop asking where I got the firmware file. This question doesn't answer the question of why the sound was worse at some point than it was before. The firmware file is definitely owned by A&K and hasn't been modified.

The wifi is a little better on the SP2K and of course it has both bands. But you right it is not multiple times better and no basis to purchase.
I bought the SP2K because I felt it drove my Utopias better and I do prefer the new DAC sound. But I concede that financially it was not necessarily a smart move.
I had a tax refund and treated myself.

i don't know it seems high res 96/24 or above on qobuz and mqa on tidal built in and apk apps respectively sucks on sp1000M, stuttering every few seconds, this does not happen when I use my cayin n6ii and qobuz or when I use qobuz on my laptop. when i go down to regular music quality cd quality the playback is fine. totally not happy with that and I wonder what is wrong here @JasonNYC, i tried factory reset nothing work, it seems the wifi chip is not capable of handling high res files or whatever the reason is, what an annoying issue to be honest spending so much money to not be able to stream high res

I predominatly listen to Tidal MQA on the SP1k but not via the side loaded app but built-in tidal app. Have had very little connectivity issues. Try resetting your router.

tried resetting the router and even bought a new router, and at home and work its the same issue so its not a router issue, on cayin n6ii qobuz works perfect on highest quality settings.

on apk an built in tidal app mqa stutters every few seconds, really not happy bout it
Try going into wifi settings and delete the network you are having issues with. Reboot AK. Add network back in. That has helped me.

I agree with olddude, some days my SP1000SS can sound superb, very crisp and sharp and then on other days not so much. And this has happened on the AK240 and on my colorfly C4 so it must be me, but it seems so convincing to my brain that it's the equipment.

My right ear sensitive with changing of listening angle (not insertion angle).
Any time I lean my head, sound will change on right ear. Difference is same night and day, plastic vs diamond...
My left ear does not have that effect.
Sadly my left ear does not have that effect.
