New TOL A&K DAP : the AK Ultima SP1000

Just tried the SP1000 SS with my Laylas in balanced. It sounds great! My prior AK240 and AK380 were not a good pairing as the sound was thick, veiled, and rolled off. It was only after I added the amp to the AK380 that the Laylas sounded right. SP1000 also sounds right and no need for any amps. The SP1000 I tried is relatively new (friend just got one 24 hrs ago) so not fully burned in like my AK380 CU stack, but my impressions comparing SP1000 to the fully amped AK380 CU stack and using balanced out:

Lows - a little thicker and richer on the SP1000. Not as textured as Cu amp.
Mids - about the same, slightly more forward on SP1000. Similar tone.
Highs - SP1000 is not as extended and airy as CU amp.
Soundstage - hard to make a judgement. SP1000 sounds more intimate, but still a very nice soundstage which the Laylas like to show off.

Based on other impressions, I did not think the CU amp would sound more neutral than the SS SP1000, but with my Laylas is does. If the Cu version of SP1000 sounds more relaxed and warm than the SS, it would be too much for my preferences. I'm going to have to try the Cu just in case. As for the new DAC chips, I honestly can't tell if those make any difference beyond what I noted above. Still a good ways off my R2R DAC.

Overall - the differences are subtle but the key thing is that I find the Laylas sound really close between the 2 setups whereas the AK380 CU on it's own sounded pretty bad. I would easily go with SP1000 for the superior portability and no polishing needed in SS chassis. But would I take a massive financial loss selling my CU stack to buy the SP1000? Certainly not for just the sound quality. But the new UI is so much better and logical imho. Single button/wheel is also easier to use. Larger screen is really nice. USB C rocks. An actual rectangular design is welcome and stacks nearly perfectly with my CDM if I wanted to go that route.

Issues - WIFI reception is just as bad as AK380, the case does not fit flush on the top edge (could be just a one off), still damn heavy, randomly rebooted in mid music play of an ALAC file once, heard some static for a sec in between gapless play once. Suspect firmware still not fully production ready.

Hmmmmm I really don't need to upgrade. I really don't need to upgrade. I really don't need to upgrade. Ok well maybe.....

Edit - sub bass is same on SP1000. I realized that my bass adjustment on the Laylas was off.

Nice post man... I need more educating on the break in on the SP1000... how long does it take?

SP1000 balanced is 3.9 Vrms while AK380 amp balanced at low gain is only 2.1 Vrms.

the SP1000 is loud with HD800's at 3.9Vrms, however an amp would make it much better. AK stated to me they will be coming out with an amp for SP1000

This is another highly debated topic. For AK, no official word, but for the Sony WMA1z, they recommend 500 hours. If I get an SP1000, I'm going to burn in 100 hr increments to see if the sound changes.

BTW - as I was trying to load a few more test tracks from my Mac to SP1000, of course I have to use the dreaded AFT app. As far as I can tell, it doesn't support USB 3.0 so Mac users are screwed.

Correction - AFT works in USB 2.0 mode. Can't figure out how to enable 3.0.

Is the Mac a USB C version. if you have to use the adapter this could be the issue. If you have a USB C Mac I would love to know if you can connect USBC to USBC. You will have to use a 3rd party cable. Use a short one if available. Also I would back up / copy all of the original files on the SP1000 to a safe spot on your hard drive. If you have to do a restore some of these files can be lost.

Also I don't know if any of these would work

Just got my SP1000 here in Taiwan. Firmware is 1.01CN and on the box also there is a sticker "CN". I assume that this means Chinese ? I am hesitating to update to firmware 1.03. Did anyone experience a decline in sound quality after upgrading to 1.03 ?

Playing with new toy. Good news usb-c->usb-c cable works for mac->sp1000. AFT is much aster than with 380.

Thats all for now...

Interesting. Would you mind checking your system info and confirm that the USB 3.0 connection is at 5 gbps? When I connect to my Mac Pro, the USB mode stays in USB 2.0 at 480 Mbps. I clocked the transfer rate at 200 Mbps using AFT. This is still about 2x faster than what I remember from AK380, but when I tried SP1000 data transfer under Windows, it was nearly 600 Mbps which is definitely in 3.0 mode.

FYI Here is what an Asian SP1000 owner wrote on his FaceBook page ( Take this info with info with Caution, I have not tested myself ) :

" I just updated to the latest fw 1.03

Source: Ak Ultima Sp 1000 SS

IEM: Fit Ear MH 335 DW SR
Ocharaku Kaede II

This new fw 1.03 make my Ultima Sp 1000 SS like below:

- High: less clarity and detail

- Mid: is thicker and not so clear

- Bass: is thicker not as detail and fast fw 1.01

Fw 1.01 has better bass attack

Now new fw 1.03 sound quality like Tube amp
Former fw 1.01 was like solid state amp

Separation: not as good as fw 1.00 and fw1.01

I prefer former fw 1.01 was perfect for Ak Ultima Sp 1000 SS ".
