New TOL A&K DAP : the AK Ultima SP1000

Almost snap.
It’s interesting the side we choose for the upside.
I use 3m double side and not a chance it will come off.

For six months now I have been using the SP1000 and the KSE1200 and I can thoroughly recommend the pairing.
You have to get the setting correct, line out with 1.25v on SP1000 and the -10db setting the KSE1200 to prevent clipping.
This has replaced my Layla and even the Utopia as my favourite listening choice.

Exactly. 3M double side tape.
I dont worry peel off can happen. I know it wont.
But displacement of spk back cover (follow norminal direction) is real, atleast on mine.

How is the KSE1500 + SP1000 working out sound-wise?

Fantastic couple.
Spk SS + Kse1200 + good quality interconnect cable = true to life music.
Headache? You can still listen to them for ease the pain.
Not much headphone can do it or they will make more headache if I put them on while headache.

Thank you, that good to know.
I’m tempted to give them a try. I see there’s a KSE1200 and 1500?

One thing: it doesn’t look they can do balanced?

it is brillant. Close to my BHSE + SR009.... sometime (depend of my mood)

Good to know, thank you.
I’m aiming to find some or 1200s and give them a try. Do you notice a narrower soundstage compared to using balanced IEMs?

This is great advice - thank you for sharing. I’ve jotted it down in case I try the KSE1200 with my SP1000.

It doesnt. 3.5 se to 3.5 se.
IMO 1500/1200 is elec.stat drivers, so it has no Crossfeed channel or "channel leakage" -> like balance driving.
1200 is lower cost but better to my ears so I prefer it.
I have 3 years old 1500 amp (exact name Ksa1500) and new 1200.
Bcs the time, may be 1500 is degraded SQ (?) Idk, I dont have new unit to confirm. But Ksa1200 (new) is better sq than the old 1500.
On the earpiece, they are same, but small change existing :
1. The protective cover of the wire is not tigh as before. So it's softer (good changing) than b/f
2. Letter "pat pending" change to "pat 9.210...."
3. The wire after Y split looks dot dot on surface.

About internal tweak, idk if has or not

Thanks @TYATYA, all noted. I’m going to hunt down some 1200s to test.

I use my SP1000SS as a portable daily, in a VanNuys belt holster. Same size as my iPhone X (though thicker) and it clearly weighs more. But then how many here have an amp strapped to their DAC and use them as a portable? It's all a matter of choice. "It's far too heavy for a portable music player" is an opinion, and clearly one that many of us don't agree with. I started with a little bitty C3, used iBasso and Fiio and Pono, then a couple of earlier AK's. Had amps on the C3 and the iBasso, too. If it sounds good and I can carry it, I do so.
Have you ever looked at the N8? That thing is essentially a metal brick...

I never heard the 1200 or 1500, would like to get 1200. I own the CL2 planar, and I have read it is 'very close' in sound to the 1200/1500, and more than 1/2 the price. Something to think about.

A simply question : does CL2 have super flat 30 ‐ 7kHz?
Kse1200/1500 is super flat responding to my ear, even how FR chart look like on internet.
With others ears, may be differ, but CL2 is used with eq by many users right?.
I personally mostly never user eq on high end dap, bcs I hear detail loss

Not even remotely. There is about 17dB (!!) of variation in this band.

KSE1500 has about 10-12dB of variation, which is still pretty large.

I agree, and I was surprised to head difference between various interconnects that I tested. And unfortunately, the best is...the most expensive

Out of interest, which interconnect is that? (Couldn’t quite read the brand).

Brimar Audio
Ta.
I’ve had a few custom connects made In the past but they haven’t all weathered that well. I had an ALO one that is still going but a few of the others didn’t stand up to real life too well. Always looking for a good brand.
