Shanling M0 - Smallest Hi-Res Portable Player - New Firmware V3.6
Dec 24, 2018 at 3:43 AM Post #4,111 of 6,413
If I am not mistaken Opus is an update to the ogg vorbis format which is and improved open source version of mp3. I use have alot of ogg encoded tracks and it provides good compression and better sound quality than mp3. Not sure how much more you will get from Opus vs ogg which of course the M0 does support. I don't have any devices that support Opus but I would love to know if there are any real differences in terms of compression and sound quality with Opus vs ogg?
Take a look at https://listening-test.coresv.net/results.htm.
This page is pretty interesting too:http://opus-codec.org/comparison/

Merry Christmas!

We prepared small firmware update for Shanling M0, nothing big, just few system changes.

Download from Google Drive: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1D_UkAzMtqv_t_YO_3Sc3DxKj457LquKb

Shanling M0 Firmware 2.3 notes

Changes and fixes:

1. Added clock and battery indicator into Bluetooth receiver mode

2. Adjusted Sleep Timer – when time is up, device will wait until end of currently playing file and then turn off.

3. Adjusted USB Digital out for DSD files.

4. Improved Bluetooth connection.

5. Improved sound quality of SBC codec.

6. Fixed problems in connection to – album covers not displaying, m3u8 playlists not read properly, files causing player to crash.

How to update:

1. Make sure that M0 is fully charged.
2. Unzip the file and copy “update.bin” file into root folder of micro SD card.
Note: If your M0 is on firmware 1.0 or 1.5, card must be formatted to FAT32. For update from firmware 2.0 and higher, you can use all cards.
3. Choose “System Update”in system settings and follow the displayed instructions. Wait until system restarts.
4. Check in settings “About M0” to be sure new firmware was installed.

The only ears I trust are my own and clear winner is still subjective especially on a $140.00 DAP. Will I hear enough of a difference to recode all my ogg tracks to Opus if and when it is supported, probably not if only one device supports it. Honestly I can't hear any difference between the same tracks encoded in aac vs ogg at the same bitrate and I will always support open source formats like ogg and flac. Until Opus becomes a mainstream codec not worth discussing at this point. Even ogg which has been around quite awhile now is still not a mainstream format compared to aac and mp3.

Hi, maybe someone will be interested how M0 will fit into the Zippo lighter case. Why? Because it's possible on AE buy a nice real leather case with a safe metal clip and magnetic closing for about $ 6. Unfortunately, the case is a bit bigger, but for transport or listening through bluetooth, when I do not need the display, is usable as it is. Recently, now I've enjoyed the Tin Audio T2 a lot, so I've got a little bit moding this case to carry T2 too. I simply put a small plastic tube with an inner diameter like the T2 on the bottom of case. I can still control M0 with the rotary button and easily pull out M0 from the case. I know it's not a solution for all, but it suits me well, and maybe someone will like it too.
Merry Christmas!

, but for a few extra dollars you might find even better :)

First and foremost, ogg is not an audio format. What you're referring to is actually called Vorbis. Ogg is a container, which may contain many datastreams. Therefore when a company say they support ogg format, without further clarification, they refer to Vorbis, yet at the same time ogg container may contain FLAC, WAV, Vorbis, Opus, ... That's why it's called ogg-vorbis, ogg-opus, ogg-flac, ...
Vorbis is slightly better at same bitrate compared to AAC, more precisely LC-AAC. MP3 is a bit worse. Opus is much MUCH better than Vorbis in efficiency, coming along xHE-AAC v2, which is however proprietary.
The reason why MP3, AAC are mainstream is simple -> money.

Hi, what exactly is the problem you are seeing?

I tested my M0, when I switch to Line out, it does what it should do - put output at the line out level and disable volume control.

Yeah I understand vorbis I was aware of it when it first came out, if you want to get into all the technicalities about vorbis and ogg being just a container be my guest. All I care about is what the file extension is after I do the conversion, in this case .ogg and that it plays on my device and sounds good. I don't really care about the rest of the explanation.

I also know it is all about money ruling the industry, I was selling audio gear back when mp3 and wma were the only compression options available and napster came on the seen . Doesn't change the fact that support licensed or not is what is required for any new technology to succeed. The fact is Opus simply isn't at that point yet and when it is then I will consider it as an option, just not now.

Since I can't currently play any Opus encoded tracks on any of my devices it is of no interest to me. Sure I would love to see Opus get wide spread adoption and become more available on devices. I support all open source license free technologies but something tells me it is going to be awhile before Opus gets any traction and widespread device support if it ever does.

The greatest obstacle to the success and adoption of Opus is the ever increasing capacity and decreasing price of microsd memory cards. This time next year I will be able to get a 256 gb microsd card for the cost of a 128 GB card now or evenless. At that point I won't be thinking about ogg or Opus as all my music will likely be flac going forward. Right now you can easily purchase music online as either flac or mp3. All my music ripped from my CD collection is in flac. The only reason I have tracks in ogg is I had a new 128 GB microsd card and I didn't want it going to waste so I needed to compress some music to fit it on the card.

Lets face it if you can't purchase Opus tracks and streaming services aren't supporting it then why will most people even think about Opus, at least outside of forums like this? Not to mention the time and effort it would take to recode thousands of tracks to Opus.

Is anyone having issues with duplicate artists? For example, there will be two entries under the artist 'The Chainsmokers' and both will have identical spellings. I checked using TagScanner and do not see any discrepancies between the tracks.

Also, is anyone issues with the volume wheel? I can decrease the volume by going counter-clockwise, but cannot increase it unless I use the touch screen.

Update: Just deleted about 30 GB of music...Not going to use profanity, but am really not amused...

What was deleted? Are you saying M0 deleted your music by itself?

For tracks, please send me two songs to check it.

And that behavior from wheel is definitely not right, I would advice to contact seller for repair/replacement.

When I disconnected my device, it was missing about 30GB of music...

Also, how can I send it to you? I tried uploading it here but too large.
