New Schiit! Ragnarok and Yggdrasil

Anyone tried the Rag as a preamp? How does it perform?

I'll get back to you in a day or 2. It's my intent to replace my WA2/Emotiva UPA-2 with the Ragnarok for speaker use; but I'll certainly compare every permutation.

My head is generally 3-4' from the speakers (PSB Imagine B), you'd think 60w would do.

First impressions:

Yes, it hums. However, you need to be within 2 feet in a dead quiet room to hear it. When used for it's intended purpose, I will never notice it. Note that I use a perfect sine wave UPS with EMI filtering between outlets (I know my power sucks). It's dead quiet through headphones or speakers. You probably don't want to sleep next to it while it's on.

Yes, it gets hot. My $2.99 meat thermometer says 120° after 4 hours (don't laugh, we use the same thing on multi million dollar mainframes). A question for Jason if he reads this, is there a number where I ought to be concerned?

It's very impressive through my PSB Imagine B speakers. I was concerned about going from 125w to 60w and shouldn't have been. Mid-gain is more than enough. I have no criticism or complaints with the Emotiva UPA-2; but there is dramatically more bass with much finer control using the Ragnarok.

I need to reterminate my Beyer T1s, first impressions are that the WA2 is better for single ended listening with them. No biggie, I expected that. I'm dying to try some headphones that the WA2 can't drive. LCD-3F or HE-6?  I'll probably let the credit card cool off a bit, first.

More when I get the Beyers reterminated, I know the Rag is natively balanced.

Anyone using their Rag to drive LS50s? They're my desktop speakers, so being able to consolidate my emotiva stack for them with my schiit stack for my headphones would save me some desk space. I don't really blast the volume, so I'm hoping the drop in wattage won't be a problem.

I'd bee interested how this amp works in a speaker set-up. LS50s quite the desktop.

If I remember correctly, the first Ragnarok review had extremely positive things to say about the Rag driving the Kef LS50s. For some reason, it isn't in the official Ragnarok reviews section.

I use the Rag with my ls50's, also in a computer desktop and it sounds fantastic! It can definately blast the volume louder than you'll be able to handle but it really sounds great at lower volumes too. I liked the combo so much it replaced my peachtree amp that output 220 watts but didn't sound as natural or enjoyable to me

I'm using the Ragnarok to drive Merlin TSM mini monitors with my Logitech Transporter and I'm very happy that there is more than enough volume. The sound is really impressive so far and I'm also thrilled with the fact that I can't hear any noise whatsoever from the speakers when the Transporter is paused. I have it plugged directly into the wall outlet.
