I personally felt the overall sonic signature was immediately recognizable as being close to the D7000, yes.

That makes sense, and was what I assumed both after I saw and heard them. I know some people LOVE them, and that's cool, but I wasn't as impressed as I had expected to be, and just can't see them as a $2K headphone. Not saying they didn't sound good - they did! But to me, they did not sound great.

i doubt that i'll have the opportunity to hear one without buying it first. i wasn't taken with the d7000 so that's a welcome disincentive.

That's pretty much universally true, of course. That said, closed cans are much easier to evaluate at meets than open cans, and my "issues" with the TH900 (a bit much bass and a bit of a treble peak) were pretty obvious, and have been reported by many other users.

That is true, as someone has in their sig: "matching the flaws of the listener with those of the phone" or something like that. The more I listen to the TH900, the less I can tolerate a stock D7K or W3000ANV.

I am oposite to you. The more I listen to the W3000ANV the less I can listen to my D7000 and DX1000.

I feel the same as you. I had a pair of heavily modded d7k with lawton cups. At first I was impressed with the improvements all of the mods made. They made the d7k's much more balanced and more enjoyable to listened to. After the w3000anv's, I was like, no way can I go back to these now. I hung on to them as long as I could. But eventually, especially with my other two cans in the house, they just didn't get used at all and ended up being sold.

thanks purrin for the detailed comparison, which is very much appreciated. just one more question if you don't mind, how did the bass definition and texture compare?

TH900 bass texture: Very good or possibly the best among current closed headphones (doesn't say much), but don't expect LCD2/3 or even HD800 performance. This facet can be very dependent upon amp, i.e. tubes, solid-state, output z, etc. Hard to tell because there's so much bass. The baffle, cups, and internals seem very solid and don't rattle, buzz, vibrate, augment, enhance, etc. This adds to the TH900's ability to reproduce bass texture.

Agree. I am hanging on the D7000 and DX1000 as much as I can but I think they are going to be sold soon.....

If the d7k and w3000 were the only cans I owned, then I probably would have kept the d7k's since they do have completely different sound signatures. But with already owning the he6 and jh13's, the denons didn't get used at all. Both of those are a huge step up from the denons.

it's been a while since i've heard the d7000 but i remember it matching the descriptions that i'd read about it having a v shaped sound signature - prominent highs and lows with recessed mids. i remember finding the treble presentation bothersome. it's a very different sounding headphone to the w3000anv with its extended but delicate treble, heady mids and nicely weighted bass. although i suspect that the th900 is a more refined and balanced version of the d7000, with a similar sound signature that still might not appeal to me, i find myself inexplicably drawn to it and would love to compare it to the w3000anv.

Exactly what I heard too, but not as good as the D7000 IMHO..
