New - Cowon Plenue S

@someyoungguy

wow thanks for the comprehensive insights! Interesting opinions based on memory and definitely worth a listen. Now I’m set for the Cowon PL - typically interested in how they implement Sabre DACs with their house sound. Speaking of which the DTR1 Prelude seem to interest me as well - looking for a similar replacement for the choppy QP1R
No problem, glad to help. I figure I've ended up owning most of them so should share my thoughts for others to benefit. I had the DTR1 too last year, but personally I didn't like the sound. Everyone's ears are different so unfortunately there's no substitute for hearing it yourself. But I found the detail it provided kind of overwhelming - like it needed more organization to the presentation to pull the music together. I had a similar feeling with the DX200 after owning it for a few months and had a feeling of deja vu when I got the DTR1. Even after burn in my impressions didn't change and I found the treble a bit brassy, and since there's no EQ I couldn't tune that treble down.

As I said, just my thoughts and you may hear different, but for me it didn't match up to the overwhelmingly positive reviews.

Sorry don't have mine with me to check. Specs say 200 GB maximum, which is a weird number. Mind you, specs for PL says 256 GB max so if 400 GB works on the PL, maybe higher will work on PS too.
Yeah , one guy put a 1 terabyte sd in the PL.

Korean only version ?
Yeah looks like it - wasn't mentioned din the original specs but is now and for sale in the shop link off the Korean web site

Yep , the 400 gig sd card is easily working.

Coming back into perspective now, having owned the S but sold it. I decided to keep the QP2R for the convenience of 2.5mm bal as opposed to 3.5mm bal. Of course my memory of S is vague now but I didn’t exactly find one to be a major improvement over another. The JE on Cowon S remained the most memorable and fun while powerful feature on the device.

I did actually prefer the power/fullness of stock QP2R sound over the stock PS sound. Would be cool if QP2R is given a little bit of radar too as it could be a great alternative. (Warm, smooth, analog too but different)

Had a Plenue S in to replace a broken 3.5mm

Pics of board if anyone is interested.

Oh and battery and line out prong receptors at the bottom for the Plenue S dock.

Snap, I was actually just listening to my PS when I saw this :)

Hmm, interesting, looks like the 3.5mm balanced is burnt out? I wonder if it's from putting in a non-balanced jack.

So for components we have:

* the obvious PCM1792 dac chip, as advertised
* After the DAC stage, the signal passes through Texas Instruments OPA1612A x 2 as low pass filters, then onto Burr Brown PGA2311U x2 chips as volume controls.
* There's also Texas Instruments LME49600 x2 Headphone buffers next to headphone outs, and a third OPA1612A just down from the 3.5mm balanced out.

On the computing side there's:
* Telechips TCC8935 A9 cortex chip, as advertised
* Samsung K4B4G1646D-BCK0 chip - 4 GB RAM
* KLMDG8JEN8 chip - seems like more RAM?
* ACTIVE 8848qm chip - some kind of power control chip

Other parts:
* Lots of S7 tantalum capacitors, some JJ Electronic JJ8i capacitors
* WM8804G spdif converter for the optical out
* Texas Instruments TPS65131 chip x 2 - seems to be a DC-DC converter. The Texas Instruments datasheet says that potential uses for these include audio or LCD/OLED screens, so could be for the display?

One thing I had always wondered with the PS was whether the pins at the bottom of the player are a true line out, as opposed to just an additional brnach of the output from the amplification stage. From what I can figure out the pins connect to that J3 ribbon connector, and the signals upstream from that seem to come from the OPA1612A on the opposite side of the board that's adjacent to the 3.5mm balanced headphone out? So I'm guessing it's a different audio path.

The 3.5mm balanced wasn't the faulty one.
The metal must have discoloured with heat at manufacture time.

Glad someone found these pics of interest, not much else on the web. You obviously spent a while looking at these 👍 thanks for the post.

Been using my Plenue S more and more and out of all the daps I heard this one gives me the SOUND I enjoy the most. Many totl daps can give more neutral sound , others give uber details , but all in allthe S just does everything better.

What's the battery life like on the S?
