I am a lowly scrub, only two Cowons

Has the apex of DAP sound quality peaked? The degree of perceptible sonic differences between flagship models is so modest that any differentiating characteristics almost boil down to a matter of personal preference.

+1. For a long time IMO - features & preference/headphone matching- at least objectively that seems to be the case. Admittedly I can't tell to what degree I am neurotic about finding the perfect combination VS merely being a compulsive gadget accumulator. Sane people that stick with one source/headphone long enough to acclimate probably aren't missing much

Is it worth it to upgrade to plenue S if i have already plenue M2?? Regarding SQ
I care about SQ only not the other features.
I love both and Im keeping both. For me the S gives a little bit more treble details. Plus the S has 3.5 balance which equals more power.

I've had the S twice and slightly preferred the M2, especially for the price difference, but I'm guessing it depends what your pairing with.
I love plenues, I think I've had/have all plenues (using JeEffect 7, ie not the JetEffect 5 D, J, V ranges) Currently have P1, P2, P2mkii, PM2, L, PR2. Good coverage of all DACs they have used there, some of them cost me less or equal to an N6ii module

Yes, pairing is very important. I have had PM2 for a while now and it sounds best for me with warmer headphones (HD6XX).
But you can tune the sound to your liking, you will never be disappointed with a Cowon.

For me the main downside of the S is that the SE output has that weird presentation you get sometimes from BAL sources (I'd say 'compressed' sounding... it's almost like an out of phase thing but not quite). It's not so obvious if that's all I'm using, but anytime I switch from BAL or from a source with dedicated/better SE it jumps out to me.

I haven't used M2 so I can't say if it's better or worse from SE, but I think S isn't really worth it unless you want to switch all your gear to BAL (also 3.5mm TRRS is kind of a PITA if you use multiple sources, though nowadays at least there are some companies selling premade pigtail adapters (and IEMatch 3.5) instead of having to custom order).

Picked up a battered Plenue S recently, needs some tlc and maybe some mods. (This must be my 4th time owning a Plenue S)

Made a start with the case, it was borderline binnable. Now looks better than when new in black :)
