I remember reading somewhere that the number of units was 3000.
My serial number is 1613, so It can't be anything less than 1500.

Wow, you're right. They don't have it on price japan or on audio cubes. The only place i see it is Amazon marketplace in the mid to upper $400.s. They have it from regular Amazon in the 9's What!
If i had to buy it again in the U.S. i would go Amazon Market place.

Edit add-At this point my two most used portables are the esw11ltd and the esw9ltd...
The esw9ltd seems to be a halfway ground between the esw9 and the esw10jpn, leaning a step or two closer to the esw10jpn.
Just got mine~ reporting in serial number 35. I'm really enjoying the sound only nitpicking as personal preference would be to have a tiny bit more shimmer in the treble. Otherwise gorgeous to look at.
Same here.
Once the warranty expired, I'll most probably recabled it with silver or SPC wire, just like what I did to my previous ESW9.
If you want more treble and detail/clarity then keep your eyes open for esw10jpn. The esw9ltd is a good midpoint between the regular 9 and the 10jpn although I feel it is a tad bit closer to the regular 9.
I'm tempted to recable with copper...in the hopes bringing vocals slightly forward and providing a little more mid bass beef. I really wouldn't want to change much else.
The thing with the esw10jpn is that people are asking about double the price of the brand new 9ltd in the second-hand market.
No doubt the more limited 1000 units, Japan domestic market only make it more collectors edition than the 9ltd
