However for R8 be careful of ordering I2S cables that are not flexible and long enough or custom made/swapped direction for it. The connector is upside down. It bothers me they still make this. AES does sound equally as good. If you have a short I2S cable that is not flexible it will probably not go well with the R8

There are a couple good looking DI20HE for sale on Canuck Audio Mart. 2nd hand gear is hard to move January February. Not sure where you live though, these usually can ship Canada USA only.

What do folks recommend for Hifiman HE1000V2 (not stealth)?

https://www.hifiman.com/products/detail/267
Depends on your budget. When I had them, the largest Audio-gd amps and DACs were fantastic with the HFM planars. If you want one box, the R-27 or HE. Separates will be a bit better, eg: R8/R7 and Master/HE9 in my experience. Just be prepared to leave them on all the time for the best listening experience.

DI20HE
I just experience channel swap out of the blue on AES from the DI20HE going to my R8H2

My friend did tell me about this 5 months ago, but I never had any issues on I2S. Only AES and that was yesterday. Today it is all fine, without touching anything, even suspecting everything else than the DI20HE...

This is a general issue on DI20HE and not only me. It should be easy to notice.

I am on the latest firmware.

Nice!
I have had Arya V2 and HE1000 Stealth. Even though Stealth is upgrade to Arya I place them same because of the spacious soundstage.

Yes I rather recommend those 3 than HE9 LE and only one part more. This risk is soo much better and cheaper to experience the ACSS.

Nothing can possibly beat this recommendation for double price I am very positive about the R1N. It scales with everything.

I challange anybody to find a better combination for the money: Used DI20HE, R1N, Master19.

I might get the Master 19 before I get DI24HE, even though it sounds incredible on XLR(HE9LE). ACSS is just another dimension, and my R8H2 has it now

R27RE costs 2300dollars
R1N and Master 19 around 1700 dollars finding a used DI20HE is still a better buy imo
This is quite helpful and interesting. Curious to hear all of your thoughts on this email dialogue below with audio gd. I anticipate spending ~$1000-$1500 now and then a similar amount a year from now

Dear Daniel,
The DAC should match with the amp for get the best price and sound quality .
If have a good enough amp but the DAC is so so level, the combo will not get the good sound because the DAC can't show the best of the amp .
On the other hand even have a high end DAC but match with a low end amp , the combo also have the not good sound .
In the limit budget , the DAC built in amp model usually have the match design so the sound is best for the money .

That makes sense. What if I went more modular and got amp/preamp first then nice DAC later? I could use the Chord Mojo 2 as DAC in the meantime right?

Dear Daniel,
The R28 NOS and D28 have lower price.

Though it can drive the HE1000v2 but the sound quality is not as good as the R27 MK2.

I may be able to find budget for that. If I only can spend around $1200 what else would you recommend?

Dear Daniel,
The basic unit I recommend the R27 MK2.

It can drive the HE1000v2 well .
Of course the higher range models can get the better sound but I recommend start with the basic model .

Hi I’ve heard great things about your products as pairings with Hifiman planars.

I just bought HE 1000v2 (non stealth)
and am looking for advice from you on which products would be best. I don’t have any equipment so am looking for preamp amp dac combo.

Of course you can buy HE-9 LE and it would be recommendation.

If you read reviews and peoples opinions here master19. Even som have R8 and Master19 and say its very good.

I think this is the path to take:

R1N and Master19

R8M3/RH83 and HE9LE

R7H3 and HE9MK3

But who says you gonna like the most expensive one?

I think R1N and Master19 is the combo to beat

I dont leave my system on 24/7. I find the difference small leaving it on 1-3hours a day.

Thoughts on starting with Master 19 then adding R1N later?

Can you say more about this please? Not sure if you mean I’ll never want to take them off or it’s not advisable to turn off power for some reason
It takes about 30 minutes for the device to warm up and sound its best.

I leave my r8, di20he and master clock on all the time as they emit very little heat.

Kingwa stated that its normal for this amp and it can withstand a very high amount of heat but I turn off my master 19 amp when not in use because it gets uncomfortably warm and will increase the temp of my room. It emits more heat than my tube amp.

Owners of the master 9 have reported that it only gets lukewarm to the touch.

Maybe the design or the smaller chassis contributes to the difference in heat, not sure but just be aware that its like that.

Imo, I would start with the dac first. I think it offers a much bigger improvement in sound and is higher up in the audio chain so the effect will trickle down.

I like my tube amp and use it the most. Its nice to have other amps but a bit of a conundrum arises because the acss connection on the audio-gd amp offers a huge sonic improvement vs everything else.

For my setup, I use the acss connection and preamp everything through the master19. It sounds much better than direct to the dac.

Thanks for this. Very helpful. I’m just getting started in the game and the only thing I have to drive he1000v2 is portable chord mojo 2.
My budget is about $1000-$1500 now and another $1000 a year from now

Hi guys
I just got the LHY OCK-2 Master Clock as a replacement for the Morion one fed by a Teradak PSU.
My impressions on the OCK-2 with few hours of burning (about 200 hs) is that is a good improvement over the Morion + PSU, mostly on lowering the digital harshness and upgrading the overall resolution.
I have the HE-7 with the DI-20 connected with the Tubulus Concentus I2S and the DAC with the Tubulus Concentus clock cable.
One plus is that now I can use the Teradak to feed the fiber modem of the house, wich gave another SQ improvement, not as big as the OCK-2, but very welcome

Next, the DI-24HE on July! Can't wait!
