So in that interest... what budget 6SN7 tubes have gotten you boutique performance at beer pricing?

If you seek you shall find.  I won't share that publicly anymore in open forum due to some Ebay jerk in China buying all the cheap tubes and marking them up 100%-150%.  Bottom line, new production Tung-Sols are around $20 a pop.  Find just about any 6SN7 around the same price and you will more than likely do better.

You can very, very easily get 1960's Sylvania 6SN7GTB's for $20 per tube, sometimes less, and that's a nice sounding tube that will slaughter any current production 6SN7 (and yes, I have heard them all).

Is date code E6B from the '60's?

I personally dont think the sylvanias slaughter the shuguang treasures. But, hey, different folks. Different ears. Yada yada.

I like the Treasures quite a bit, wasn't so crazy about the Bad Boys that I tried. But I don't think I've heard the Sylvania 6SN7GTB variant that Skylab is referring to.

The seller says the date codes are E6B (on top), but the 6SN7 ID guide says the dates are indicated by the stacked numbers on the side of the base(?):

96
44
84

The bases are black with green lettering and they have chrome tops. Google hasn't been of much help so far.

Actually I was just talking about the more regular current production 6SN7's like the Tung Sol and EH, not the super-premiums like the Treasures. I liked the Treasures, although I didn't think they were worth the asking price.

I prefer something warmer like the RCA grey glass in the Peak.

They are going for around $100 for a matched pair now:

What do you like better at that price?

$100 matched pair?  I'll take the Sylvania chromedomes over them any day for less than half the price.  True chromedome GTAs, not the bits of chrome flashed on top.  People have to be careful w/ the various species of 6SN7s floating around w/ the same manufacturers label.

There is no current production 6SN7 I have heard I would ever use.  TS, EH, TJ, ST are all yuck to me.  I think Skylab is being nice tbh.

The chrome domes are no good.
You want these instead.

oh, i love the gray glass RCA.  i've bought 3 or 4 of them, and never found one that was quiet enough for headphone listening, unfortunately.
