NEW 2015 - HIFIMAN HE400S

Less bass than the 400i? I disagree and if anything I would the bass qualtity and quality is better on the 400s. I skipped out on the 400i way back when as I didn't dig the bass much as the original 400.

O.K. Maybe not less bass, but to my ears the 400S definitely had lower resolution bass than the 400i.

To be honest, after the first few minutes I stopped critically listening because the overall SQ just wasn't up to the level I was hoping for.

And then when I listened to the 400i, I had no reason to want to listen to the 400S ever again.  It just didn't do anything for me.

umm you and I had very different views on the 400s I listened to the 400i/400s out of the schiit magni/modi uber stack and out of my personal stack (rwimod/piccolo)  and both times the 400i had anemic bass, while the 400s hit hard when it needed too.  I agree that the 400i has some more tremble but the clarity was neck and neck.

Xero's impressions of slightly muffled sound and Tyll's zeal towards these give me the impressions that they're a true successor to the HE-400.  Possibly sharing the HE-400 sound from bass to lower treble, and fixing the super spike the original HE-400 had in the upper treble.  If that's true, it's going to be a glorious product for the headphone community.

True...but, it's a bit odd isn't it? Why not just come out with this hp as a successor to the original he-400 a year ago when the 400i was released? Maybe it's the naming scheme that leads to confusion as money suggested.

Make it sound right and all is forgiving though.

Wouldn't the price point mean it competes with various brands of modified T50RP models?

Are those...new velour pads? They look like full velour versions of the Focus pads.

Edit: ah indeed they are, reading up the last few pages of the thread. Cool.

I bet hifiman didn't expect the love people would still have for the 400 after the 400i came out. People still want the bass of the 400 with a fixed treble.
