The HD 600 couldn't be neutral because of the rolled-off highs.

I've heard this often, but to my ears, this is not the case. If you're used to a headphone with a spike in the treble region, I could see how they might sound this way.
Headphones are "fun" and "energetic" like the dt880 and Grado's, have these spikes.

If you want neutral, buy the hd600. You are not going to do better in that price range.

I think that I will just settle for headphones, since I'm not ready to spend money on room acoustics.

Unless you have a particularly poorly shaped room, or it's either so plush that there's no reverberation or it's all wood and concrete so there's too much reverberation much if not all of the the quality of sound of your system has to do with putting speakers and you in the right places. A guy named Jim Smith (yup Smith) wrote a great book on setting up your system (plus lots of other cheap tweaks). Google him and "Get Better Sound" for more info.
