akgs in general are pretty picky when it comes to being amplified, so without a good amp I certainly would not choose a k701 or k601. I used an ultrasone hfi680 for two years on the go and it did great with just about every genre. I am a big akg fan, but only when properly amped. the hfi680 benefits from amping, but does well without one also.

You can check the AKG K81dj, they sound good with portable players.

I used to have the akg k181dj, a nicer version of the k81dj, but the hfi680 is much better. More balanced and no recessed mids.
