After the cancel of my headphone amp plan, I had a extra budget. I think why not make the budget be a re-birth!!! So I tried to recruit a new member of my headphones.

I posted a wanted for a second hand RS1i, and fortunately, I got one in 12 hours

I changed the ear pads with AKG K601 ones. It became much more comfortable but it sounded not like a Grado.....

I think that rs1i sounds denser than 325i. The layer of the music is more obvious. You can distinguish different instrumnets easily, especially for the rock muisc, guitar, bass. And so do the soundstage.

I have to emphasize that the earpads really influence the performance of Grado. Like what I said, it sounds not like Grado anymore. Not ruin but influence.
In the other words, what I hear is not a genuine Grado.

However, the new earpads give me the chance to recognize the fantasy of Grado.

Hey, I know this is old but which pads would you say are best for grado between the dt990 and akg 601? I'm going to be doing this for my HF2

I've owned both and it's quite a bit better. I really couldn't get over the strident treble of the SR325s. The RS1s have better instrumental separation, the bass is deeper, more impactful and more controlled. And the treble is the biggest improvement. It's certainly there (classic Grado) without being overly bright or hot.
 
IMO, the RS1/RS1is are the best cans John Grado's made to date.
 
And FWIW, I preferred the SR225s to the 325s.
