MrSpeakers Alpha PRIME: Impressions and Discussion Thread

More often than not, I rock my Prime with Dx9(low gain, vol around 200-ish).Good enough for my uneducated ears, and I have 3 'powerful' portable amps for when i feel like going audiophile :)

Work is a lil slow this year so no upgrades is due in any forseeable future but that DUM cable keep calling me. I have a balanced solid silver cable to pair with SR71-B. I think I read somewhere that DUM is not solid silver so thats a reason enough.

Thanks for the suggestion. I am ok even if it is not portable. I also came across the o2 amp, is there any dac to pair it with (apart from the ODAC) something cheaper like Fiio etc?

If your source uses either a coaxial or optical output, this little DAC may be perfect.

I am looking for a pair of headphones with good sound and good isolation/leakage as I am going to use them in office. Portability is also a plus. I don't mind adding amp.

I am kind of swinging between Alpha Prime and Signature Pro. I have gone through this thread and the Signature Pro thread, but still cannot make up my mind. The problem for me is there is no place to audition them in my city (Sydney), which is a bit unfortunately (I know addicitedtoaudio have both of them, but they are in Melbourne.).

Has anyone fortunately ever listened to them? How would you compare them, like sound stage, resolution, separation, transparency, or anything you want to share? I also ask this in Signature Pro thread but haven't got any answer regarding the comparison between Alpha Prime and Sig Pro. I know that the Alpha Prime leaks little and should be fine to use in office, but definitely not portable. I'd like to hear comparison in sound, the more the better.

Thank you for your patience.

To get leaks from the Alpha Prime ... you will need either a bad seal of the cups or play you music at insane levels.

In most cases, the person seating next to you won't know if you are playing music or not most of the time :)

I bought the Primes so I could sit next to my wife while she watches TV and she can't hear anything I listen to. I get no leaks that can be heard at less than 2 feet away.Standard disclaimer of old ears, loud TV, moderate music levels, etc. :)

Thank you guys. I may have worded incorrectly. What I wanted to say is Alpha Prime is excellent in terms of leakage (from what I have read). Sorry, my poor English has confused you:)

Good news is I just received a call from a local store. You know what, they have Alpha Prime and Signature Pro! They are just a few bus stops away from my place! I am going to try them out during lunch break. Will update my thought.

This is what I posted in Sig Pro thread:

  Just an quick update:
I bought Sig Pro in store just 30 minutes ago.

Great sound even just out of my DX90, great build quality, really portable. Sound-wise I may prefer Alpha Prime slightly more, but not a big difference to my ear to sacrifice the portability. I also like Sig Pro's look more.

I now understand why Sig Pro get the most head time for some of you. They are really just GREAT!

Thank for all of your opinions and information.

Alpha Primes are great, more comfortable, have better sound (I cannot fully describe it as I am not good at this, and also because of a short listening time, but it should be more spacious, more laid-back, better separation because of larger sound-stage, and attractive mids) to me but not a big difference, while Sig Pro is portable and sounds great even with portable devices. So I finally chose Sig Pro.

can someone recommend a lightweight aftermarket cable please? emphasis on comfort and maneuverability

I am using the Norne Audio Vanquish with my Primes and I really like it.
