MrSpeakers AEON Flow Open - Impressions Thread

On from my previous post, I have been researching getting a longer cable from a 3rd party in Europe, but the problem is the Hirose connector ... no-one I've contacted has them.

Boys & Girls, you can get alternate cables from MrSpeakers but they would be an extra fee
The website still says:
ÆON headphones include our DUMMER (Distinctly Un-Magical) cable with an integrated dual 1/4" and 3.5mm OR and XLR plug and a compact case for travel or storage.

Same typo as was mentioned a few weeks ago (should say "an" XLR plug, methinks). The text for the closed version doesn't mention XLR.

I believe you. What they’ve said at trade shows and to us as dealers is the Aeon comes with what it comes with and that a balanced cable is an extra fee

Have you guys tried emailing MrSpeakers order support and asking if you can upgrade your order to the XLR cable? (for the extra fee mentioned of course)

I am very interested in buying the AFO, but no matter what $800 are $800. Like many of you, I can't audition them before making the purchase. I basically rely on all your comments in order to make my own conclusion. The more I read, the more I get a clear picture of the headphones. At the same time, the more I read, the more confused I get :frowning2:

Somehow, I am getting the impression that the AFO will not "WOW" right out of the box. Maybe it is going to take some time to get the right sound. Either driver burn-in or ear/brain burn-in (just getting used to)

For the people that already have the AFO. What is it about the sound of the AFO right out of the box, that even Dan Clark says it needs burn-in? Is the sound that off? Is there anyone that have liked the sound right away?

Yes, I appreciate one can buy 'additional' cables from MrSpeakers, but I believe the point being made is that at the point of purchasing the headphones there does not seem to be a way to selecting alternate cable options... at least not in my experience.

I swapped a few emails with Dan over the weekend. The balanced cables have been delayed, which is why there's no option for selecting one during the checkout process. At this time, if you want XLR directly from MrSpeakers, you'll have to wait on ordering your AEON until they become available.

I understand your words. I may be wrong but I’m pretty sure Dan said the Aeon doesn’t come with that cable choice option at no cost.

It would make sense to have this option, given that it's available for the Ethers, and given that the DUM cable costs the same regardless of the connector chosen. Might be different for the ÆON's DUMMER cable, of course.

IME the sound right out of the box primarily concerned the soundstage ... it sounded a bit 'boxed-in' ... and I detected just a touch of glare on piano in certain frequencies. But it really isn't a big problem and I would not worry about that ... after 25-30 hours everything improves considerably. I'm personally not really hearing much difference beyond 30 hours ... perhaps a little better definition in the soundstage overall. Any headphones I've had needed some running-in for similar reasons.

No, I realise there would be an extra cost ... that's not a problem. It was just a matter of being able to get a cable that I preferred when I purchased the headphones at whatever cost. No matter.
