I take back what I said awhile back.

After extensive listening I am preferring low gain to high gain on my LCD-4.

It also feels less fatiguing.

EDIT: I keep going back and forth and checking with my meter to make sure it's the same volume.

Maybe I am wrong and my original thoughts of high being more engaging is correct.

EDIT2: I don't know anymore, but I find myself liking low better. Sounds more clear and dynamic I guess?

HAHAHAHA

Very honest opinion DK. I actually had the exact same struggling experience like you with my V281 and LCD4. I keep moving forward and back in between high and normal gain. In the end I chose high gain (+12db) on my V281 with the LCD4. Found it to be more punch, more dynamic and better separation.

However, this is mostly depends on amplifier design. Some headphone amp will have distortion on high gain and could not output huge power. Some headphone amp however, have very well control on voltage output and current flow, hence sounds better on high gain (better power output). And with headphones like HE6 or LCDs, it's recommended to use high gain for better power and better performance.

Tested for awhile today and my observation remains.

I like low gain over high gain. Something seems more clear and more natural in the presentation.

Both gain settings with matched volume (tested with SPL meter)

Hey guys! Long time viewer and first time poster on head-fi! I've recently splurged on the Neo 430HAD and i'm egarly awaiting its arrival!! Upgraded from the HDVA 600 + Schiit gungnir multibit. I've got a question that i'd like to ask y'all...

I'd like to run two headphones at once out of the Neo. I currently have the LCD-3's... i'm looking for a different pair of cans that will be on equal volume level as my lcd's.. which headphone would you recommend? I was thinking the HD800s but its 300 ohms versus 100 ohms on the lcd-3s.

I want to sound volume to be the same on both 'phones ... any ideas? Should I use the 3-pin dual xlr or the 1/4'' jack?

My lcd-3's will be using the 4 pin xlr jack.

Any advice would be much appreciated..

Don't want one phone to be way lower in sound while the other one is blasting...

Thanks!

PJ Harvey, Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea is an incredible LP and CD.  Her best.

Listening to PJ Harvey's "Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea" through Ether C's and then through HE-6's. Wow! Grinning like an idiot this is so fine. Exquisite amp/DAC with both cans and the range of her voice! Amazing...

Question about the oversized power unit in the Neo 430ha... is this essentially an on-board power conditioner? Or would you still get benefits from running an external power conditioner into this unit?

I'm trying to decide if I should keep my Adept Response aR2p-T High-Resolution Power Conditioner.

Any input/advice/feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Odd question... you mean the on-board power supply? All power supplies are in fact power conditioners of sorts. Whether or not it will benefit from further external conditioning is really a question that will never have a completely straight forward answer. You could always just try it with and without and determine for yourself.
