Meze 99 Classics Discussion + Impressions Thread

Recently started playing with headphones after years of m40x's being the best I had owned. I got some DT 770s which are very nice, and then the Drop 99's showed up and I MUCH prefer the sound of those. Spent most of the afternoon / evening yesterday with some classic rock / Beatles albums and it was quite enjoyable.

I have some Brainwavz Hybrid & Perforated pads on the way to play with, as well as a pair of Aeon RT Closed to compare them to that should arrive tomorrow.

The 99's have been featured in some H-Manga. Had to share:

Hey guys! I’ve decided to give a balanced dac (iBasso) a try and I need a 4.4 mm termination cable. I’m thinking of buying it directly from Meze but I’m not sure if I should go for the basic OFC (59 eur) or the silver-plated (119 eur) one. Reviews and opinions say that the silver cable is really good but I’m not sure if it’s worth the extra money. What do you think?

Silver is snake oil.

So everyone and all the positive opinions are wrong?
I mean, I'm sure it's not *bad*. Just not better than a properly built cable using OFC and gold plating. If anything, silver cables have a higher probability of being built poorly because silver is harder to solder properly.

And besides that, you still have the bottleneck of the internal wiring between the headphone connectors and the drivers. Which I assure you is not silver. If silver really was better, you'd have to replace ALL the wires in the system with it, not just the one cable between the amp and the headphone connectors.

The whole cable debate will surface for sure on this, but I have both and while I like the sliver cable, I find the copper much more enjoyable because it had better warmth and depth. I also do not like too bright a signature so it's just my opinion. YMMV.

In the end I´ve found a very good offer of the 4.4 copper cable for 35 euros so I have decided for this one.

I hope that the combination of this cable + iBasso dc04 pro DAC + Dekoni pads on the Meze 99 Classics will be a temporary endgame in a long time.

EDIT: Well, everything has arrived and I have to say that the combination of the neutral sound of the iBasso, the balanced cable and the Dekoni pads make the Meze 99 classics a surprisingly balanced headphone, something I thought I would never say. Now the bass is much more precise, much more and it goes lower and with a correct extension, it disappears quickly and it doesn’t bother. The voices are more forward and their timbre is very natural. The high frequencies are well defined, there is a lot of information in them and everything is well separated and clear. In general, extremely happy with the set.

No, they actually believe they hear a difference, but it is explainable with the science of expectation bias. It is extremely likely that people simply imagine they hear a difference because they expect to hear a difference. That is fine, the placebo effect is real so however you get there, if you're happy with getting there, perfect.

Why isn't it plugged in? Just likes the feel of it on her head?

Half the time actors wear headphones on screen, they're either on backwards or not connected at all, for the sake of hiding cables.
