Meze 99 Classics Discussion + Impressions Thread

I've been curious about the 99 Classics for a while. Never tried any, but when I was looking up FR graphs, I noticed it has some vague visual similarities with the DT 770 Pro 80ohm (which I have and love). They both have basically the same 4k dip. from 700-4000hz follows a similar shape to the 770, but just much more reduced. The bass shelf also looks like they just sort of boosted and extended it. I'm a bit of a bass head so I reckon the 99 Classics might be a nice replacement for my DT 770s. Does anyone own both to compare?

I don't know about the frequency response graphs but I've compared both (I own the dt770 and returned the Mezes) and imho they are polar opposites. The Beyers are extremely analytical, extremely revealing with imo class leading bass response but they will do anything they can to make a track sound bad. With great recordings, they are fantastic. The Mezes really just aim to please. What you get is gentle treble, nice mids and decent bass. For 300 bucks, they didn't wow me at any time, which is why I returned them, they really don't offer anything over other headphones I own. They do sound nice, it's easy to enjoy music with them.

We are experimenting with different shapes of earpads but I would like to add just one thing: our experiments show that a larger diameter cup does not necessarily result in more sense of space. Also, comfort can come sometimes from a deeper earpad with a cavity just as wide and tall as before. Either way, we are still experimenting and will show some prototype earpads at different CanJams.

I'm curious if there is any magic earpad combination that can increase the physical depth without impacting the sound.

Thanks to everyone for suggesting mods to improve the Meze 99c. I am keen on picking up the Brainwavz Hybrid earpads and a silver cable balanced cable based on the suggestions. I have an Earmen Sparrow which only has 2.5 mm balanced slot. So, would that also enhance the sound quality or is it only 4.4 mm balanced that is noticeably superior to the 3.5 mm one

If I may ask, what mods did you use for these cans? And how does that work for them specifically for vinyl playback? Thanks!
Sorry that was misleading, the hd650 have all the custom cans mods and i use them with a hybrid headphone amplifier and a hybrid phono amplifier, i use a different system for digital music.

OK, that makes it all clear now, thanks for explaining :)

Just some follow up on the Dekoni pads. They are more neutral than the stock pads and if I were using less than 4 hours a day a good choice.
I do more than that, after 4 hours they start to irritate, the added pressure becomes bothersome. Have gone back to the stock pads and since I use
a Cayin RU6 now, the bass bump isn't the problem it was with a Mojo. One thing I do note using the RU6 is that the Meze 99 driver mid range resonances
are more noticeable/easier to excite, something that doesn't happen using planar headphones with the RU6

By that you mean less bass output on these?

bass response is flatter using the Dekoni pads but I believe thats largely because the pad material provides less of a seal and a little more distance between ear and driver.
I can enjoy using original Mojo with the Dekoni pads but the stock pads will sound exaggerated on pop music bass lines with original Mojo.

In case anyone is interested, seems like Meze did a silent revision on the 99s.

Someone over on Reddit discovered the same a few weeks ago:

https://www.reddit.com/r/headphones/comments/1155m8u/did_the_meze_99_classics_have_a_silent_update/

And I just received a brand new pair of 99 Noirs that also has these new changes.

I never tried these headphones before, but the annoying noises from the metal headband people reported seem to be managed quite well now. I can walk around and shake my head and everything with no problem and without hearing the metal.

Got an amazing deal yesterday. A friend of mine bought himself new 99 classics and didn’t like them and wanted to send them back. I asked him whether he would sell them to me for a discounted price and he said sure what about 150€? Well, guess what I did :D

My first Meze product ever. Have them connected to a L&P W2 131 which is connected to my 2021 M1 Pro MacBook Pro and so far so good. I’m doing a little bit of burn in as we speak.

Are the smaller Meze pads and the silver cable still recommended as solid upgrade options?

Any good 10-band EQ settings (only using the internal Apple one, though)?

Thanks!

Great price, IMHO that is what they should be priced at. I picked mine up for $135 USD brand new (Crutchfields employee cost).

If you want to tone down the bass, the smaller Meze pads are kinda the first step. The Brainwavz Oval pads reduce it further and the Yaxi stpad2 even more. So you can tune the bass to your liking with different pads pretty well.
