Meze 99 Classics Discussion + Impressions Thread

Hi,

I would very much appreciate advice on a decent 4.4 pentacon aftermarket cable for my 99 Classics.

Meze seems to be out of stock.

Aliexpress seems to have budget-friendly alternatives. Any luck with one of them?

Should it be as budget-friendly as possible?

It is actually for the Hip Dac so good enough is my goal (I just want to go balanced). I noticed though that some cheaper cables had questionable fit and finish that could damage the headphones (according to some buyers).

Yes, that's why personally I'd like to spend a bit more and not worry about any issues related to tolerances.

If you can find any that actually fit the 99 cup, Meze uses an ultra slim 3.5mm TS plug.

Here's a good one I hope :

Is there any way to make the 99's fit into their transport case with the cables on ?
OR
Is there some kind of replacement 3.5mm connector that would allow to achieve such result with a custom cable ?
Not a chance for either.
That is the only thing I thoroughly dislike about the 99s is the proprietary, boutique style plug.

To reiterate what others have recommended before: these silver cables are worth the upgrade to liven up the top end. I have the 4.4 mm balanced that I use with one pair of 99 classics (with a Fiio 4.4-3.5 mm adapter) and just bought another 3.5 mm version for another pair (I have 3 pairs for shared listening). The ergonomics and sound upgrade are easily worth it. The difference it creates is pretty obvious even if you're just getting into the game.

Yes, opening these cans up a bit on top is what I'd conisder a step up.

That is absolutely true.

But there is one thing I don't like about the silver plated cable.

It seems fragile because if there is no music playing I can hear strange sounds coming from movement on the cable.

I am not sure if it is properly terminated.

Once music is playing I can't hear it anymore.

Otherwise it's a great cable, although it could be a bit longer.

AFAIK custom cable makers can use any connector that the customer desires, so they certainly can use similar connectors. The 99's aren't the only headphones with recessed connectors, and the plug itself is merely a 3.5mm TS. Here's an example of compatible connectors : https://www.ebay.com/i/113871193058?chn=ps

EQing them to our liking would make more sense than replacing the cable IMHO. It's cheaper, and at least we know what we're doing.

That can be due to silver oxydation, IF you have silver connectors. In that case you need to clean them periodically with a special cloth such as the one Audioquest provides with their headphones. That suppresses the strange sounds.

I have the one with gold plated jacks.

And I never unplug them. They are always plugged into the headphones and my dac.

I'm listening right now to my 99 Classics. Man I really enjoy the sound. It's just so much fun.
