Meze 99 Classics Discussion + Impressions Thread

The Meze 99 Classics aren't perfect. No one will mistake them for flat, clean, clinical cans. But holy hell, they're fun.

That's the shortest and at the same time the most accurate 99 Classics review I've seen in a while :D

Whew, these are very nice! Just had some delivered and only skipped around some tracks to get a quick feel of the sound but they’re really nice!

I got them used and I THINK I have the small pads. I don’t have big ears at all and my ears are just fitting inside the cups okay, and the cups look pretty small too.

Is it just me or is there no left and right cup marker?

Glad you like them - I love the sound. L and R are marked on the cable connectors to the cups.

That is true.

One unique thing about the 99 Classics is that both drivers are identical, so you choose which is right and which one is left.

On your cables there is a marker for 'L' and 'R'

Been playing the Noir with the newly acquired N3Pro, the tubes and this headphone are a great match. Such warmth and richness are superb.

I do have the balanced version of the SPC. To use the tubes, I have to step down and use an adapter as the tubes only output through 3.5 SE. Still a really great sound.

It's a perfect combo. I like that both the UL and TR modes sound great with the 99 Classics, depending on the recording. Also plenty of power from SE. I rarely go above 70 on low gain.

My first headphones. Great with Audiolab m-dac and iPhone for untethering from amp

Yep. One of the many beauties of the Meze 99 Classics is that an iPhone with the Apple Lightning DAC dongle runs them so cleanly and clearly. Sure, you'll get more volume from an amp, but it's not needed.

Plus, repeated statistical measurements have shown that the $9 Apple DAC dongle is just as clean -- if not cleaner -- in sonic reproduction with low-impedance headphones like the 99 Classics than all of the overpriced DAC USB sticks on the market (looking straight at you, DragonFly).

So was I wrong thinking that it's a DAP?

You're not wrong. It is the Cayin N3Pro. A special DAP with tubes. A great sound unit.
