McIntosh D1100 DAC/Preamplifier impressions

the HP output is very respectable and dead silent even on my super sensitive Westone W80 IEMs. I am almost one week in using it as DAC. So far, it's been flawless on iMac running Audirvana 2. The muting circuit is a non issue for me. It doesn't engage when playing gapless albums.

HI, this is robbporters. This is my first post and am glad for the interest in the D-1100. First, the d-1100 is a great dac!, I have had mine for 4 months andlove it with my Focal Utopias. I have a question as far as the " preamplifier" part of the d1100. How good is it as a preamp? My " none headphone" system Includes a Mcintosh mc452 amp with Paradigm Persona F3 speakers and Wolf audio music server. Do not get me wrong this is by far the best system I have ever had and I love it's sound, however was wondering.... I know the dac is outstanding but how is the preamplifier of the d1100? For those who may know does any solid state Mcintosh preamp sound better? I was looking at a high end Pass Labs, any comments? Thanks!

Hello, and welcome to Head-Fi! I use the D1100 with another headphone amp from Cavalli Audio, but do not use it as a preamp with speakers. I'll bet that @TSAVJason can answer your question.

The D1100 is probably one of the very best single ended preamp you can get other than the Chord DAVE. It is the best preamp for headphone use McIntosh makes.

The preamp in the D1100 is very good. I doubt you'll notice any difference with something such as a C1100 going into the MC452. If you had other sources such as a turntable, then it would be a different story.

Both are great. The TT2 costs less while in my opinion the McIntosh is more open sounding with much less coloration.

My preference is slightly warmer sound. I will mostly listen with speakers. My power amp is Bryston 4b3 and speakers are Dynaudio focus 380. Which one will work better for me? I had hugo 2 before but i sold it because i often found it a bit bright for my setup.

Based on what your past experience with the Hugo 2 was I’d definitely suggest the D1100

My D100 USB input just kicked the can or at least upon turning on the D100 it briefly shows as an audio device on my mac before disappearing again 1 second later never to return. Not sure what the problem is. You can see it connect and then immediately disconnect. Looking at the system 'wifi' logs of all things shows the 'DeviceInserted' immediately followed by a 'DeviceRemoved' with no obvious error code or reason. I thought maybe it was the USB port or cable but other devices plugged into it work fine. There was a major storm here today so maybe something spiked it somehow. So here I am back again wondering if the D1100 isn't a better upgrade then f-ing around with this to fix it or finding a D150 used. In any case I guess I need to return the D100 to McIntosh to fix the USB but that will probably cost more than just throwing it away since it's discontinued and worthless on the used market.
