McIntosh D1100 DAC/Preamplifier impressions

What was the change that you made? I've been using the default settings because I have no idea what I'm doing. :triportsad:

The settings I chose are the ones in that screenshot. However after a power cycle I'm back to the original settings with the Apple computer, and the fade-in has returned. The display shows 48kHz even though I'm sending it audio from a 44.100 kHz AAC file. I'm stumped here, none of my Schiit DACs have this issue, and McIntosh support is blaming iTunes.

Figured it out, here's what I used to fix the USB fade-in issue in macOS. It's in the Audio MIDISetup app, of all places!

I really need to UN-friend @TSAVJason because he is bad for my wallet. He suggested that I try the D1100 and join the big boy DACs club (I'm a McIntosh C50 owner). I've been a McIntosh fan since the 90s so his comments got the wheels turning.

The Gist of the thread I linked to is about how hard it is to get firmware updates on Mcintosh Products. I don't know anything about Ivan, but the thread was useful and there are a lot of legitimate complaints from very loyal Mcintosh owners about the issue. I've since found out that all new c1100 preamps are being shipped with the latest firmware updates so I will be ordering one!

As they ship they get the firmware most current for that particular shipping month. There are subsequent updates and a good dealer would teach you how to do your own updates if that's what you'd like. It's not complicated but if you are a bit shy or unfamiliar with the process, yes it could get bricked. It's always a good idea to be sure you're not guessing. Also McIntosh wants you to have a relationship with your preferred dealer. So they do want your dealer to offer a higher level of customer service.

Bet it sounds nice with the WA33. How does it compare to the DAC in the C50?

I'm a big fan of Lampizator DAC's, but the D1100 will look nicer next to the rest of the Mac gear in the living room, so have my eye on one of those for next year.

repost from my comment over at Computer Audiophile:

I have D1100 in for review as well. Received the loaner yesterday afternoon. I am using it as a DAC first with my Simaudio Moon 430HAD headphone amplifier and Focal Utopia headphones. My source is a 2017 27" iMac running Roon with a mix of ,WAV CD files and DSD. I am getting a soft pop sound through the headphone when switching between .WAV and DSF files, not loud at all even through headphones and the Moon's volume at 44.5. Unfortunately, the D1100 does not play nice with my Sony HAP-Z1es via USB Audio so it leaves me the iMac + Roon as my best source.

Early impressions are: very wide soundstage, superb imaging, instruments separation, D1100 extracts the smallest detail in the music giving me the entire frequency spectrum in equal parts. I own the McIntosh C50 since its release a few years ago. The performance level of D1100 is very clear even on CD quality music files. I'll have an unboxing video soon and a full review after some quality ear-time.

Looking forward to your full impressions!

I use a PC and have been experiencing loud pops when changing tracks with Tidal. From the Computer Audiophile review, it seems I should be hearing a temporary mute instead? Calling McIntosh to ask about this is on my to do list, but unfortunately I've been traveling for work so my at-home to do list is getting longer. :triportsad:

on my D1100, the soft pop only happens when switching from DSF to WAV. The DAC fades switching from WAV to WAV music. I am running 2017 27" iMac. Windows is a PITA IMHO. Use a Mac if you want flawless playback right out of the box.
