Massdrop x Sennheiser HD 58X Jubilee Review & Measurements

I had buyers remorse at first with the HD 58x's until I removed those damn foam pads in front of the driver. What a difference! They came alive. I'll be doing the curtain mod also. Now they have that high end sparkle these old ears desire. I prefered the sound of the HD-598'S better before removing the foam from the HD 58x's Jubilee's.
Just got mine in Yesterday. On first listen, I was feeling the same and was planning to return them today. I Will def try this mod. My only other Sennheiser is the IE 300 which I love listening to on the go.

But difficult to me, they are not the same.
I went ahead and bought a pair of 6xx as well. You're right they aren't the same. The 6xx strike me as the better sounding headphone & the 58x fuller bass isn't worth the trade-off in detail, to my ears at least.

If one doesn’t dig the stock tuning from the HD58X and prefers the headphone without the foam…my take is that the person bought the wrong Sennheiser.
You guys should probably check out the HD560S instead - the Sennie for closet Beyer fans👍

I would give your brain a few days to adjust to the new sound signature before returning them or modding them.

Overall, I'm very disappointed with HD 58X.
It sounds muddy and plain.
It's not better than HD 6XX.

I think HD 58X is for gaming. It's not for music appreciation.
HD 58X made me stop want to listen to music. I realized I have to sell it.
I'll never buy it again.

Here's how I rank Sennheiser headphones based on sound stage width, detail, and instrument separation:

1. HD 800
2. HD 560S
3. HD 700
4. HD 650 >= HD 6XX
5. HD 58X

I haven't listened to HD 660S so I'm not sure how that will fit into this ranking.

I sold my HD 58X for $70 :gs1000smile: I think HD 58X worth around $85 max. It's like a light version of HD 650.
HD 560S is a better reference headphone than HD 650.
If you need wide sound stage and detailed instrument separation, go for HD 560S. HD 560S sounds more like authentic music.

Well..I could’ve told you beforehand😛
Hell…you could’ve told yourself beforehand if you’d bothered looking up a mere frequency response before purchasing.
Your favourite headphones are bright. The 800, 560 and 700 all come with extra zing in the treble (upper-mids in the case of 560)…ie you are used to and coming from bright presentations.
The HD58X is a slightly warm tilted can. Tadah!!

Edith!
Recs for bright afficionados: K701, K702, K812, DT1990, Arya
Recs for neutral afficionados: HD600, HD650, R70X, K612, Sundara
Recs for slightly warm afficionados: HD58X, HE500, K245

Hi guys.
I'm wondering how many of you are using an EQ with the 58x?
I've tried some popular profiles, mostly based on ORATORY1990 and RTINGS measurements (from autoEQ and handmade from graphs).
But still ended up using my own (the brightest one).
Maybe you would like to share a few of yours, so I can try them?

Hmmm, HD58x is providing tonight's listening pleasure but no I'm not using EQ with them myself.
