The treble spike is not at 10kHz, it's more of a shelf that extends from 10kHz to 14kHz with the peak somewhere in the middle that is problematic. HE500s, for instance, has a rounded ridge centered at 10kHz and yet it has one of the most forgiving trebles ever.

I said around 10khz...dang.

I will be more exact in the future.

That's great to know about the He-400 as I'm not a big fan of sparkly treble.......like it recessed/veiled...

Can my amp reasonably drive the Mad Dog to 95% of its potential? I listen at low to mid volume.  Here is my amp specs 130mW rms @ 16 Ohm 88mW rms @ 30 Ohm 51mW rms @ 60 Ohm 28mW rms @ 120 Ohm 12mW rms @ 300 Ohm.  What do you guys think?

You should go back to the lyr!!

It should be pretty decent but not 95%. Maybe 85%....just guessing  based on the specs indicated. The Alpha Pad version is a bit more efficient than the dog pad version.

I try to keep my office rig simple, just one amp/dac(Nuforce iDo) and one headphone.

How's the nuforce sound with Mad Dog?
I have the DragoFly, even though it's great detail and deliver enough power to the Mad Dog, but it add some trebe more than my taste.

This little combination worth under 150USD makes the Mad Dog sound so extremely good. I did not feel that the sound evolved much at all when feeded out from HRT DAC and LYR at my friends place. At gain level 2 it is to loud before I have even turned it more than 25% of the knob.
DAC: Hifimediy Sabre USB DAC
Amp: C&C BH

Other thing is that I can not tell enough how much I love the Mad Dog is sounding, one of the best buy's you can do out there. Sounds way more than it cost aswell.

Hi!
I think I'm gonna take the plunge and get me a set of MDs... I don't have any headphone setup at home yet, I'm a total beginner. What would you guys suggest for a DAC/preamp/amp at a maximum cost of $500? Or a separate DAC and a preamp/amp? I don't want to go beyond $800 MDs included... It'd be to listen to my FLAC files in Foobar2000 on my PC with Windows 7.

I can also go the DIY route if you got any great value-for-price items in mind as I'm used to building amps... I'm just looking for a pretty good (obviously I will not get top-of-the-line with $500) setup, mostly for blues and rock, hence guitar-based music.

Thanks!

Asgard 2 + Bifrost?
or Dacport?

Well the Asgard 2 is 249€ and the BiFrost is 449€. Total makes 798€ which is about $900, total $1200 with the Mad Dogs... That would be $400 above my budget. The Asgard 2 could be paired with a good but cheaper DAC maybe?

I have an acquaintance in the US if availabilty is an issue, but the unit needs to have a 230V power option though...
Thanks!

Just wanted to say thanks to Dan. My Alpha pads arrived in record time for my second pair of MD's.

Oh, and cheers for the nice little bonus bag. It's a nice touch.

Oh and what about a Schiit Magni + Modi combo? Would that be any good with the Mad Dogs?

They sound fantastic out of my M/M stack. Very cost efficient as well.
