My headphones keep breaking.
 
What kind of over-ear headphones will get me the best durability?

My budget is $100, but I would, of course, prefer a serviceable product below $50.

From what I have read and worn, Bose, Skullcandy, Zalman, Plantronics, and Bose are off the table.
Also, whether a headphone purports to be "noise cancelling" means nothing to me, although passive noise cancellation would be cool.

My favorite pair of headphones are a pair from Acoustic Research, but I seek something I can throw in my backpack and bring with me on hikes, or whatever.
 
This looks like the best forum to start with these kinds of questions.

The Sony V6 and 7506 (which are actually the same except for the model number printed on the side) are pretty durable.  There's all kinds of stories about people holding on to the same pair for 10-15 years and only having to replace the earpads.

in that list the sony 7506 "studio" headphones would be my choice.  but you can probably score them new for not much more

BTW, does 7509 have a vintage equivalent, like 7506 has V6?

I offer my eternal gratitude to the user with the screen name 'maverickronin' for the response.
I think I am going to buy the Sony headphones, or those like them.
I'm hoping for something that will clamp down on my ears well enough that they will not be resting on my head.
 
Ideally, if I lean back, they will not fall off, like my current pair do.
 
Feel free as a rodent on meth in a forest to chime in if any of you other esteemed denizens have anything to say on the subject of headphone durability and non-fallingoffness.

The Sony's are very durable.  To make them more comfortable, buy Beyerdynamic DT250 replacement velour ear pads (costs about $20) and use those instead of the stock Sony ones.
