Loads of closed backs have a really consumer orientated bass driven sound - is there anything out there that swims against the stream and does a good treble-happy, bass-lite analytical sound signature?

I've heard the AKG K271 MK. II btw, and that isn't to my tastes!!

Thanks in advance

Shure SRH-440 is flat and analytical in my opinion, and it does have lots of treble. In terms of quantity, the bass is maybe on the light side in comparison to others closed cans, the impact maybe a bit stronger for some, but i kinda like it. For me, it was strange moving from PortaPro to SRH-440, the sound is so different that my first impression out of the box was: "Where is the bass? Wow, so bright!!!".

My PortaPro sounded so muffled and warm in comparison to my Shure's that it was scary at first, but i do love that big extra clarity and detail you get. In my opinion, SRH-440 is pretty much balanced in all frequencies, maybe a bit more powerful on the highs, but that's it. For $80, they are awesome and you can't go wrong with it.

So far I've read the SRH-840's are pretty analytical; I'm not sure about bass light though. Another analytical phone are the HD-25's, and the newest phones to come out that you might be interested in are the Beyerdynamic DT1350's.

The HD-25's have good tight bass, but are definitely not that bass-heavy in any shape or form.

Thanks for suggestions so far! I've also heard that the Beyerdynamic DT660 is analytical. However, looking at pictures of it - it seems that the older version had a grey grill back and the newer version has a solid black back. I wonder if there is any difference in between the two - specifically is the new DT660 still analytical?

The K271MKll are nice, but I prefer the GMP 8.35 with the pads mod...here more info: http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/406658/the-german-maestro-gmp-8-35-d-monitor-in-the-studio-serious-about-audio-indeed

SRH440's taught me you don't have to spend a lot to get a lot with headphones. I can't recommend them highly enough if you want a very balanced headphone with great impact in the lower regions.

I would say: go for the DT 1350. I am pretty sure you won't be dissapointed. The DT 660 is fine, but the DT 1350 is way better imo.

Closed and analytical; Beyerdynamic DT-48 comes to mind
