Not cheap looking or feeling at all.
Try to think of this as a Sennheiser hd650, closed of course and easier to drive.
I run this headphone from my phone. With volume at 3/4 it's plenty full.

noise cancelling in my opinion is not so great but better than nothing. You might be pleased at how good it works.

 
as far as being easy to drive.  i'd say it depends on your source.  on my galaxy s3 my UE6000 didn't quite have enough punch/volume at 100%.  it's the sole reason i purchased a fiio e11.
 
but i agree, they are not cheap looking or feeling at all.  i've had mine for almost a year now and they still look great.  active noise cancelling isn't great but the passive noise isolation in itself is pretty awesome. 
 
 
 

Yes, UE6000 in passive mode is more balanced than M100. Which is precisely why I prefer M100...I prefer a fun headphone (when I use the UE6000, I amp/EQ it to be more like the M100 anyway). For me, M100 is a clear upgrade to UE6000 (particularly if listening to the UE6000 in active mode, or passive with bass boost amp).

Have you heard the XS? I would think XS would be an upgrade for balanced (passive) UE6000 listener?

 
 
i would hope the $300 m100 would be an upgrade.  ive thought about picking up some m100's but i think i'd be disappointed in the "upgrade" value i'd get with the price difference.

@luberconn I thought the Samsung had a really good audio section, so wow!
My last two phones have been HTC and I have had no complaints with any of the audio, power and quality.
Then again I don't listen LOUD, just loud and not prolonged if ever.
 
I have a few iems that are nearly as efficient as the  UE 6000s
tenores and ie8 are in that group.
 
I do have one of the original Little Dots MKI.
I use that with the HE400s.
I wouldn't give up the button control of the 6000s headset for what would be a marginal improvement in quality and volume (for me)

the ue6000 sounded good with my samsung gs3, just not quite loud enough.  especially on older tracks.  at 3/4 volume that you stated, they would be pretty quiet with them.  at 3/4 volume with my TTPOD T1E's iem's, it's plenty loud. 
 
i just upgraded my phone to an LG G3 yesterday but havent tried them out with the ue6000 as of yet.  with the TTPOD T1e, it sounds great   I'll try out the ue6000 with and without the e11 tonite.

well, to be clear, M100 does not sound like a "$300" headphone...so if that's what you're expecting, you probably would be disappointed.
 
firstly, i paid $250 for mine. i believe they've been that price or lower multiple times, so I wouldn't suggest anyone pay full price.
 
secondly, i don't think they really sound like a "$250" headphone either. they are more like a "$200" headphone in sound, with a $50 premium for the design - a design (the folding mechanism and carry case in particular) that i would gladly pay $50-$100 premium for. it is seriously that good (which is all i was really saying with my original post).
 
so yes, M100 is an upgrade - but to clarify, i view UE6000 as a "$100-$150" headphone in sound, while i view the M100 to be a "$200" headphone in sound, with a "$50-$100" folding mechanism.
 
(obviously my own completely arbitrary valuations, more about relativity than absolute values, and to be taken with a grain of salt)
 
anyway, don't get me wrong: i am a big supporter of the UE6000! for the crazy prices it is available (and as i said, i think it's a "$100-$150" headphone), value for money wise, i'm not sure what else can compare! glad you're enjoying it!

Has anyone else found the headband padding uncormfortable and if so has this improved over time?
I have found the overal "clamp" of the earpad to be a little loose and the headset moves a little as i move my head.

You know I think these are one of the most comfortable hp's I have used in a long time. Give yourself time to become accustomed to the signature. They are more close to neutral than a bass can.

The headband was too hard at the beginning and the heavy headphone began to get uncomfortable.
But with the time it gets better
For smal heads the UE6000 is a it loose I have to admit as well.

Meanwhile I have the HD558 and its a totally different hp... But I like it a lot for home use. The UE6000 has the right to stay as well.

Alright, here are my non-sound impressions.

The build quality is so so. There are some creeks and some inconsistencies in the padding. The materials are wonderful and soft-touch, which is very nice. Cable microphonics are pretty poor; I will probably be buying a new cable off of ghentaudio (for home use at least). The decision to put the headphone cable on the right side is good for portable and mobile use, since most of us drop our phone in our right pockets. However, I do not like it, as I will mainly be using this with my laptop.

Also, the UE6000s need an amp to get to a decent volume/sound good. Are they perfect for portable use? No, they aren't IEMs. Are they good for travel? Yes, I'm probably going to get an E10k to pair with them for my upcoming trip. The collapsing design and included bag are very nice, as is the removable cable.
 
Pads are deeper and wider than the M50s, so they wrap around my ear snugly. I prefer this to the HD600s, which are huge and hit my neck. Leather pads also feel far better than velour on the skin. Just a note, as is with all good, isolating, and sealed headphones, you can expect your ears to get hot.
 
The switch for the noise-cancellation is not as smooth as it could be and one time when I switched I got no audio at all. As for the noise cancellation, its' a gimmick. They isolate so well, you probably won't ever need it. However, I did turn it on and it does work to an extent (I'll talk about the sound change later).
 
These will probably be replacing my M50s.
Sound to follow and oh yes so far its great.

^^^what source are you using for your UE6000?  i needed an amp with my galaxy s3.  i too thought it lacked power and overall volum..... but just picked up an LG G3 and they dont seem to need an amp paired with the G3

UE6000s are very sensitive, most mobile devices can power them pretty well - even my Nexus 4 (which had garbage output) was ok at full volume
 
You dont need a dedicated amp as much with these cans, theyre very good for portable use imo.
