Don't forget that the UE6000 need longer burn in.
Everything between your head and the ear cups will result with bass loss, for example if you wear glasses forget about good seal and shaking bass.
The UE6000 need perfect seal to make good pressure in the bass department.

It might be my glasses (rather close to my skull) but I have no problems with a seal.
 

  I think you will like them....most people prefer them in passive mode.

I picked mine up on ebay for 36.00, yep, white and in good shape. I spend more time in these than any other full size headphone I have. My only complaint is after a few hours they can be uncomfortable.

I browsed closed back headphones that can fold or collapse for transport, because as I said my M50s look horrible.

The Focal Spirit Professional/Classic, MDR-1R, and 840. Nothing else really had the portable capabilities I desired (along with a removable cable). Tyll praised the UE6000 so greatly and said that they compare to the MDR-1R and are better than the 840, so why not. At 1/4th the price I'm not really expecting any disappointment. Wasn't too impressed with the MDR-1R when I tried it in store either.

UE6000 is decent for portability (I like it enough to own both UE6000 and UE9000), but V-Moda M100 trumps it by a long shot...nothing compares to the portability/sound quality combo of the M100.

Having had both, I would say the UE6000 is by far more balanced sounding the M100. The M100 did not stay in my collection long. granted both the M100 and the XS are very portable V-Moda does a great job with that.

The M100 is a fun little headphone, but it definitely needs an amp (for me). My friend has one, which I've tried a few times. I enjoyed it, but wouldn't buy it at that price.

i consider myself somewhat of a basshead. in active mode, i think these things have huge bass. coupled with fiio e11,  they tickle my ears on bassy tracks.   on active it does suck out some of the mids and boost the highs.  but like someone else mentioned, i think the sound is welcome on some tracks and on other tracks, i turn it off when it feel it takes away from a song.  i kinda like the option.

I listen mostly to alt rock/folk/soul/acoustic on mp3/flac on the laptop. will be getting an mp3 player soon, occasional AVR use.
 
After much research.... groan... I've moved away from the Koss dj pro100/200 (need an amp) and abandoned their lifetime warranty. I was going to just get the Superlux 688B, but i am now thinking of getting these, as i've seen them for £55 ($80). With the bonus of noise cancelling they look like an attractive proposition. I've read load of reviews but before i buy tommorow i wanted to ask the owners. At that price at the moment i'm not sure i can do better.
 
Without the Noise cancelling on:
Do they need an amp/what impact? Are they easy to drive without? (i know nothing of amps)
 
What is the durability like? i've had a similar priced pair of headpones fall apart (i took great care of them) but within warranty.
 
What's the comfort like, warm ears, clamp etc?
 
Finally an odd one, i can get the white for £4 cheaper, how's it look, cheap or not?

Durability is pretty good - ive had mine for a year with no visible marks and i dont treat them very well. The last few months i just throw them in my bag to work and back. Pretty sure ive dropped it a few times.  Its mostly plastic and rubber so its not super prone to scratching. 
 
Of course ymwv - be careful and they should last a wehile. 

Comfort is good, pleathers are soft and ear cups are big enough for me (average size) - they kind of clamp tight at first but you can flex the band and loosen it.  They get warm, but its probably a symptom of all closedd back cans - my HE-400 and HE-400is dont get warm at all since theyre open. 
 
Its VERY good < $100 imo, more fun than my NVX Audio PT100 that people seem to rave about (im not sure i like them yet).  I also like the switches for NC/Off/Passive mode, when someone comes up to me at work i simply switch it off instead of fumbling with my phone to find the volume/player controls. 
 
I feel like its versatile too - NC mode for super bass thumping fun, and passive for other genres.  Its not as neutral as the NVX's but its not insanely U shaped in passive mode. Soundstage is decent, clarity is good. I liked them very much when i came from Apple Earpods heh.

Not cheap looking or feeling at all.
Try to think of this as a Sennheiser hd650, closed of course and easier to drive.
I run this headphone from my phone. With volume at 3/4 it's plenty full.

noise cancelling in my opinion is not so great but better than nothing. You might be pleased at how good it works.

I'm liking the UE6000, that Inner fidelity review is good,. At this price it looks hard to beat. I have seen it on ebay for £10 cheaper. New (damaged box) but have been warned about potential knockoffs there (they have 10,000's reviews). Amazon £50/ebay £40. mmm
 
How is the bass on this with NC OFF? I'm not a "bass head". I'm aware the NC has hiss & turns the bass on significantly.
They are comfortable but do they feel "weighty?

Yes, UE6000 in passive mode is more balanced than M100. Which is precisely why I prefer M100...I prefer a fun headphone (when I use the UE6000, I amp/EQ it to be more like the M100 anyway). For me, M100 is a clear upgrade to UE6000 (particularly if listening to the UE6000 in active mode, or passive with bass boost amp).

Have you heard the XS? I would think XS would be an upgrade for balanced (passive) UE6000 listener?

I owned the XS...I really liked the sound signature. It was an enjoyable hp for an on ear. The portability and build quality could not be beat. The isolation was not good however and if I moved my head even a bit quickly they would be crooked. So I didnt keep those either.  V-Moda is not inexpensive, and I paid 60.00 for the UE6000. To me V-Moda makes and excellent product and has great customer service, but I had the T51p's and DT 770 Pros at the time and was happier with them, then I added the UE6000 and it was one of the best value/quality purchases I have made.

Can anyone tell me where I can learn how to EQ my headphones to get the most out of them?  I try messing around with the EQ settings but I have no true understanding of how the hz and dbs affect each other and how to maximize the potential of my cans!?  I tried a couple apps (i.e. Onkyo, Golden Ears, Woojer, etc.) but I know I'm not hitting the sweet spot.  Any guidance for this rookie?

Bass is still definately on the warm side even in passive mode, compared to my neutral NVX Audio PT100, and even my HE-400i.  While the 400i beats it in quality, in passive mode it still losses in impact - theres a bit more rumble in passive mode. 
 
UE6000 should satisfy most bassheads imo, unless theyre looking for bass cannons
