LG V20 Sound Quality

I have tried using my LG-H990 as a source for Woo WA7 Fireflies, Woo WA3 and Maverick D1 Plus.
In each case using Audioquest Tower 3.5mm to RCA cabling.

My conclusion is that the V20 is absolutely not designed to be used as a standalone source.

Not sure why you're outputting sound via the headphone out from the V20. Much better to go digital out via USB C to an external DAC/AMP like the MoJo, etc. Sound is as good as most other portable sources.

Has anyone here tried conencting an external dac to the V20?

When connecting Mojo to the V20 i hear intermittent stutter while songs are playing. It really takes me out of it. I tried using UAPP and it does that too. Could it be my Type C OTG Cable?
same issue here with nexus 6p, which uses usb-c. no issues with my huawei tab which has a micro usb. go figure

I would very much like to try outputting via USB C, but have no idea how to do this. I wanted to use the headphone out to be able to utilise the phone's DAC. The only cabling I have for USB C is the original equipment charging cable that came with the phone. My Maverick DAC has a plethora of inputs - which is the best way to go??

The issue is not usb-c. My Meizu Pro 5 connect flawlessly to Mojo with a USB-C<-->micro-usb cable.
All resolutions were handled nicely.
The cable was a cheap TechGear 30cm cable.

I had the worst trouble trying to connect LG V10/V20 with Mojo, it just didn't work. Something fishy with the software if you ask me, since V10 and Pro 5 share the same dac.

You need a USB-C OTG cable like this and connect a USB cable to a portable DAC like thr MoJo. Works great.

You can't amp the V20's via the headphone jack - not good enough IMHO. You can get good results from a nice IEM or other headphones but not amped to another amplifier.

The beauty of the v20 is that it still sounds good headphone out to decent headphones. BUT, it can also double as a digital source to a portable DAC via the USB-C digital out via OTG connector.

Good luck!

Thanks for your kind advice.

I shall obtain the requisite OTG connector and have at it! Let's see how it works with Nuprime uDSD first up.

I use USB Audio Player Pro on my V20. Works well and also has settings to get rid of any stuttering issue. Costs a few bucks though.

can one still use the 32-bit quad dac on a 32ohm or less phone? I have a Grado SR60. Heard that it needs a phone with higher than 32 ohms impedance for the V20 to utilize its better dac.
I own the V20 now. You need a headphone extender (like you'd have for a phone case that buries the headphone port deep) and an impedance adaptor. Amazon sells one. It ships from Hong Kong, but gets to you faster than estimate. Before I got the adaptor, I used a 3.5 to 1/4 adaptor and tricked the phone with a set of HD650.

You heard incorrectly. All the reports that the phone needs to be in high impedance mode to utilize the quad DAC's is wrong and originated from a misunderstsanding. As long as you are seeing the hi-fi icon at the top of the screen the quad DAC's are active. This has all been sorted out and confirmed. I know this thread is a little long but I'm sure a search or taking a little time to read through the thread and you will see the pertinent posts where several members have received confirmation directly from LG that the quad DAC's are indeed active in normal, external, and high impedance modes. I hope we can finally put this whole issue to bed once and for all.

NO! The Quad DAC is fully utilised with your Grados, and can be turned on and off manually should you wish to. However, the phone will not engage "High Impedance" mode with 32 ohm cans, and will output the necessary gain suited to lower impedance phones. The jury is out as to whether high gain or "normal" mode sounds better, but there is no need to trick your phone into HI mode with your Grados. It is unlikely that you will experience an improvement in SQ (in my opinion of course).

+1
Quite correct.

In my opinion the V20 has slightly forward but very controlled highs - the Sabre DAC is open and detailed, and I hear no treble "smearing" or in fact any other unwelcome artifacts.
It is certainly headphone dependant - my Beyer DT770 250 is at the very edge of brightness, whereas my AKG K171 MkII are more laid back and smoother on the top end. The AKGs are in fact an almost perfect match for the V20's sound signature, and at 55 ohm/107 dB/V are easily driven by this remarkable device, rendering a powerful, crisp and most enjoyable sound quality on every genre that I've tried. Bass is the most surprising aspect - tight and punchy with no flab at all, deep and satisfying. The K171 is a forgotten gem in the AKG line up for some reason, but I love mine and will expound on it's goodness at every opportunity!

Maybe it's because my K10 is very sensitive to that.
What I found these days is in external mode, that treble problem become very apparent.
But if I connect the K10 directly, that reduced alot.
What are you using? Neutron or poweramp ?
