Just found out that the IDOL X+ (cheaper than the IDOL 3) comes with the ESS SABRE 9018. Not bad for a 200€ phone.

Huh thats odd. In the US, the idol 3 is almost 100 dollars cheaper than the x+, caming in around 120-130 usd. The other is over 200 from what I can find. But we should probably leave those phones to a different discussion lol.

A good dac needs a good amp too.
 
Never heard of the MAX9720 amp in the Idol. Specs show it puts out 50mW at 16 ohms while the ESS 9602 does 49mW at 32 ohms.
 
Guess it doesn't matter if you plan to stack the phone with an external amp. But that kinda defeats the purpose of putting better dac chips in each phone, especially when the built-in Snapdragon dac section is not bad.

IIRC Roxane impedance is less than 20Ohm, so it's fairly easy to drive. If you like colored sound like DAPs' tuning, you can always use EQ.
